ADF : Place the item into the document feeder tray. The printed side faces up and the top edge goes into the tray first. Adjust the width guides to fit the item. Open HP Solution Center with one of the following methods:

3. Select the check box, Prompt for settings at the time of scan , and then click OK .
4. Click Home , and then start the scan again.On the "Scanning from..." screen, click the appropriate option under "Scan Shortcuts" on the left. Each shortcut has a default group of settings that display when you click it.

Click Change Settings , and then read through the drop-down menu choices for all of the settings for the shortcut, adjusting any settings as necessary. Also click the Advanced Picture Settings button and the Save to file Save Options button to view your choices and make any changes. Important : HP Solution Center versions and options vary, depending on your printer. For specific instructions on all the settings the software offers, click the Help button on the home screen or settings screens in HP Solution Center.

Click Scan . The preview screen might display, if you selected the option to show a preview. Use the options on the preview screen to make any desired adjustments before you finish the scan.

After the scan completes, it goes to the destination that you specified in the settings.

Scan Button: HP recommends that you first get comfortable with using the "Scan Picture" and "Scan Document" on-screen "buttons" in HP Solution Center as explained in the previous steps. By doing this, you determine the scan settings that you use most often, and then you can more easily set up the scan button on your printer. Important: Before you use the scan button on your printer, use HP Solution Center to create the settings for that button . For example, you need to decide whether you want a settings prompt screen and a scan preview for each scan. Also, you must create the list of "shortcuts" that you want to display on the front panel of the printer. To get started, click Settings , click Scan Settings , click Button Settings , and then click the tab for Front Panel Scan Buttons . Read through the options, and then create the settings that you want. NOTE: The steps to set up the scan button on your printer can vary depending on your printer model, and the version of software that is installed. Scan settings are set in the scanning software. Most scanners come with a simple option (i.e. fully automatic) and an Expert option (where you can change the settiings as you wish.

To set scan default:
Select Scan Mode
Press Scan Settings
Press File Type
Press TIFF
Press Multipage
Press Ok
Press Utility/Counter
Press User Setting
Press Initial Setting
Press Current Setting
Press Ok
Press Reset

This will only affect address book destinations. Program destinations specify within their settings the file type.

To scan front and back:
Select Scan Mode
Select Destination (must be done 1st!)
Press Scan Settings
Press Simplex Duplex
Press 2 Sided
Press Ok

Scan settings include resolution, output type, and file type. These settings can be changed using HP Director.

1. Open HP Director, if it is not already open:
   • Windows 2000: Click Start , click Programs , point to HP , and then click HP Director .

2. In the Select Device list, select your product, if it is not already selected.
3. Click Settings , and then point to Scan Settings & Preferences .

The Button Settings dialog box appears, with the Destination List tab on top. 2. Using our example of scanning directly to email, select the Email destination in the Front Panel Destination List and click the Move arrow to move it to the top of the listing.
3. Click OK to save the new destination setting and close the dialog box. All of the scans you do using the HP all-in-one front panel buttons will now be sent directly to your email program, instead of to the HP Photo & Imaging Gallery.
4. Click Scan Picture or Scan Document in the HP Director to scan using your new settings, or click a Scan button on the HP all-in-one front panel.

Setting a default scan profile Use the following steps to apply a scan profile to all future scans.

1. If you have not already done so, open the HP Director and click Settings , and click Scan Settings and Preferences .
2. Click one of the following, depending on the type of scan profile:
   • Scan Picture Settings
   • Scan Document Settings
   • Button Settings The corresponding dialog box appears. If you chose Scan Picture Settings or Scan Document Settings , the Scan Settings tab is on top. If you chose Button Settings , the Scan Button tab is on top. All of these tabs have the setting you need, Apply Scan Profile .
3. On the Scan Settings or Scan Button tab, click Apply Scan Profile and select the scan profile that you want.
4. Click OK . The scan profile that you selected will apply to all future scans for the scan type that you selected.

Follow these steps to correct the problem:

1. Open the HP Director/Solution Center software.
   
2. Click Settings , click Scan Settings and Preferences , and then click Scan To....Setup . The Button Settings window will appear.
   
3. The Destination List tab should be visible. The software will scan the computer and determine what scan capable programs are installed on the computer. These will be listed on the left side.
   
4. Select a program you wish to scan to and then click Add to move it to the right side. Programs listed on the right will be available as scanning destinations when pressing the Scan button.

5. On the Scan To Button tab, you may also specify what type of scan you wish to launch from the front panel and establish a default scan resolution and color depth setting.

6. Click OK to save the changes and exit the setting.

Causes:
