HP Deskjet 5550 cartridge carriage stuck SPAM SPAM SPAM 1-800-532-4187
I have had this same problem a few times, not due to changing the cartiges, but following one of my kids yanking on a peice of paper as it was printing. After I tried all the unplugging and clearing and re-starting, the arm was still stuck on the left. I read on some forum (can't remember where) while the printer is off, to gently push/pull on the cartiges until they un-jam or start to move. I flet like I was going to break it, but it has worked every time.
Hope this helps osmeone else!
Ink cartridge light keeps blinking

you need to print only in black if that is all the ink you have, and also you need to remove the color cartridge as it still registers in the printer as able to be used, although it is empty or near so. Did you remove the tape over the print head fron the new ink cartridge? Do a print head alignment, or use the toolbox icon to tell the printer that you just replaced the cartridge. Some HP models chip the ink cartridges so even a refill wont register as a full tank and the printer wont print. chip needs to be reset (difficult) or just replaced with a new cartridge.
Printer not working properly
The DeskJet printers are notorious for this problem. When you turn the printer off and back on in the middle of a print job, it gets confused when it is back on and cannot interpret the print language when it resumes from the computer.
Whenever this happens in the future, you need to delete the print job off your pc before turning the printer back on. If you have windows XP, click START, SETTINGS, PRINTERS&FAXES, then double-click on your printer icon. When the queue window comes up, right-click on the active print job, select DELETE, then reply YES to confirm.
If you don't see the print job delete (it might take a minute or so), then you will have to stop/start your Windows print spooler. Go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL. Double-click the ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS icon. Double-click the SERVICES icon. Scroll down and locate PRINT SPOOLER. Right-click on it and select STOP. Wait about 10 seconds, then right-click on it again and select START. Close out of the SERVICES & CONTROL PANEL windows. Open your printer status window again and see if it is clear. Once it is clear, it will be safe to turn your printer back on.
Hope this helps.

make sure you don't have any small pieces of paper stuck in the printer
Paper jams can be real or false. The unit may
report a paper jam when there is not any jammed paper, however, the solution to
a real paper jam or a false paper jam is the same.
WARNING:
Jammed paper
must be removed using the rear access door
and the power cord must be disconnected or a carriage jam or mechanical damage
may occur.
Do not remove jammed paper from the front
of the unit.
-
Turn off the HP product and turn it so the back of
the unit faces you.
-
Disconnect the power cord from the back of the
all-in-one. The power cord must be disconnected to allow the paper feed
rollers to turn freely.
-
Locate and open the rear access door by pressing in
on the left side tab and then pulling the door toward you.

I have an HP color printer. When printing the
Black printer ink in HP Printer may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In such a case a manual cleaning of the print head should be carried out. In doing the manual cleaning, one should spray Windex heavily on paper towel and wipe off the surface of the print head.
