Canon PIXMA MP460 All-In-One InkJet Printer Logo

I can't scan anything from my MP 460

I go to the MP 460 navigator and try to scan, when I press on "preview", it the computer tries to communicate with the printer, but then an error message appears that says "2,155,0" cannot communicate with printer. Check the cable to ensure the computer is connected. Check status.
The cable is connected properly, and I am able to print with no problems.
I have tried deleting the program and re-installing the MP navigator, but this has not helped either. I purchased the printer a month ago, and I've never been able to scan with it. Please help, none of the manuals have been of any assistance. Thanks!

Will not scan to my computer

What OS are you using? Did you install the full software (MP Navigator), not just the drivers? If you have the MP Navigator installed, how are you connecting to the computer? If you are using a USB cable, try a new cable, a different USB port and a direct connection if you are using a USB hub. (If you are using a USB print server, go to a direct connection to the computer.) If you are using the all-in-one over your network, try disabling your firewall temporarily. You may need to add a rule to the firewall to allow the scanner communication. (This will depend on the software/hardware firewall involved. Please add a comment with the details for support on adding rules.) The scanner requires bi-directional communication with the computer. This can fail even though the printer works. Make sure that the monitor program is running; this listens for button presses on the all-in-one.

Next open MP Navigator and try to start a scan from your computer. If you can't scan, then you should check for a communication issue, as described above. If the scan works from the software, then you probably don't have the destination buttons assigned in the software. Use the details from your initial scan to set the defaults. Go to Preferences and then the General tab. Adjust the details for the Scanner Button Settings. Click OK to save.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you continue to have a problem.

(one common issue for a USB connection is installing the OS default drivers by connecting the USB cable before installing the Canon software. If that is your issue, please uninstall the printer. Then with the USB cable disconnected, install the Canon software. Connect the USB cable when prompted to do so. The OS software usually only has a printer driver and thus will not allow the scanner to work.)

Try to adjust the scanner resolution

Solution: Adjusting Output (Scan) Resolution (Windows) - MP150 / MP170 / MP450 / MP500 / MP800 / MP950

Adjusting Output (Scan) Resolution By changing the resolution, you can set how clear the image is going to be.
The higher the resolution, the clearer (but the larger) the scanned image is.
The resolution can be changed before scanning. (Note)
If the resolution is doubled, the image data will be quadrupled.
If the data is large, problems such as slow processing speed or lack of memory may occur.

To change standard scan settings using MP Navigator, click here
To change more advanced scan settings using the scanner driver, click here
Using MP Navigator
  1. Place the document face-down on the platen glass.

  2. Launch MP Navigator.
    1. On the Windows desktop, double-click the 'MP Navigator 2.0' icon.
    2. Alternatively, in the Windows taskbar, click 'Start', click '(All) Programs', 'Canon Utilities', 'MP Navigator 2.0' folder, then 'MP Navigator 2.0' icon.

  3. Click 'Scan Photo/Document'.

  6. If necessary, set other items as well.

  7. Click 'OK'.

  8. In the Scan Photo/Document window, click 'Scan' to start scanning.

Using the scanner driver
  1. Launch MP Navigator.

I have a Windows Vista computer and a Canon MP210 copier/scanner and have a document in printer to scan and can not transfer to my computer, I can't find disk and put information from disks years ago on a...

First, if you connected the data cable to the computer, uninstall the current driver and then unplug the data cable. (This is for USB cables.) To uninstall, open the Devices and Printers control panel (click start and then find the line on the right hand column). Right click on the unit and click on Remove Device.

Then navigate to http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp210#DriversAndSoftware and select your version of Vista (32- or 64-bit). Download the software/drivers. The MP Navigator is the full software and will let you launch scans from the unit once you set it up. The first driver in the list is just the basic driver and will only work with scans initiated by the computer.

Always launch scans from the computer first. There are buttons in the MP Navigator that match those on the all-in-one. The default settings for these need to be set up (see the help in the program) and include resolution and location to save files. Then when the monitor program is running, you will get the MP Navigator coming up with a button press.

Vista can scan without the MP Navigator with three included programs: Paint (File > Import from Camera or Scanner > New Scan), Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan) and Photo Gallery. Howevver, if you do not install the Canon driver, you will probably get a printer driver only from the OS.

If the problems persist, try a new USB cable and a different port. If you use a USB hub or print server, try a direct connection. Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer and can fail when the printer works.

I hope this helps.

(if the copy function works, then the above information should help. If the scanner itself is not moving, check for a transport lock and that it is lighting up as it should. In the last case, the unit may need service.)

Hey Yasmin,

I had the same problem.

I installed the MP Navigator (MP Navigator Ver. 3.03 (Windows 7/7 x64/Vista/Vista64/XP/XP x64/2000/Me/98) from the canon website (http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0900173112.html) and then I released the scannerlock (http://www.fixya.com/support/t5363070-trace_release_scanner_lock)
and then I could scan! Not only through the printer itself by pressing the (<I>) button but also through the MP Navigator program. When I pressed the (<I>) button on the printer, the scanned document would be automatically saved on the computer in a folder of MP Navigator.

Hope this helps you!

How do you get the Canon Pixma mp500 to scan?

Hi there,

Scanning images,
About Scanning images
You can scan images from the machine to a computer without printing them and save them in popular formats. Scanned data saved on your computer can be processed using image processing software. Furthermore, you can use the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software to convert scanned paper documents to text data.

* Before scanning
Before scanning images, confirm the following :
- Are the necessary software (MP Drivers and MP Navigator) installed ?
If the software is not installed, install it.
- Does the document to be scanned meet the requirements for an original to be set on the Platen Glass ?
- Is the machine connected to a computer correclty.
Confirm that the connection between the machine and the computer is physically secure.

Scanning Methods.

A) Scanning Using the MP Navigator
MP Navigator enables you to scan in documents loaded on the Platen Glass and view images saved on your computer or on a memory card. Scanned documents can be previewed and easily printed and edited according to your needs.
You can use the supplied application softwares to edit or print the document you have scanned.

Windows : Double-click the [MP Navigator 2.0] icon on your desktop to launch MP Navigator.

You can launch the following application software from the MP Navigator.
* Easy-PhotoPrint (Photo Printing)
* ArcSoft PhotoStudio (Photo image editing)
* ScanSoft OmniPage SE ( Converting scanned document to text)
- This application software may not be supplied with teis machine in some country.

Note : If you did a [Custom Install] and only installed the MP Driver and MP Navigator, these application software were not installed and thus cannot be launched. To launch any of the above application softwares from MP Navigator, do a [Custom Install] once again to install them.
For detailed operations of the MP Navigator, refer to the Scan Guide.

B) Scanning Using the Operation Panel of the Machine
You can scan documents to your computer by using the Operation Panel.
Important : Do not insert or remove USB cables when scanning images with the machine connected to a computer, or when the computer is at sleep or standby mode.
*If you are using Windows XP
The program selection screen is displyed the first time you press [Color] or [Black] on the machine.. Specify the [MP Navigator 2.0] as the application software to use, check [Always use this program for this action], then click [OK]. From the next time, MP Navigator is automatically started.

*When using Mac OS X
For the machine to start scanning when [Color] or [Black] is pressed, you need to set MP Navigator as the starting application software in Image Capture under [Applications] of Mac OS X.

1) Press [ON/OFF] to turn on the machine.
2) Load the documents on the Platen Glass.
3) Select the scan option.
a) Press [Scan].
The scan operation selection screen is displayed.
b) Use Up or Down arrows to select the scan operation, then press [OK].

Attach to E-Mail : The document is scanned, and the image is attached to an e-mai using the e-mail application software.
OPen with application : The document is scanned and displayed on the registered application software.

4) Press [Color] or [Black].
The document is scanned. The settings configured from MP Navigator apply when scanning.
Important : If with some types of original the position and size of the image is not scanned in correctly, please refer to the "Selecting the Behaviour of the Operation Panel with Mp Navigator " in the Scan Guide (on-screen manual). and change the MP Navigator [Document Type] and [Document Size]] to match those of the original being scanned.
Note : The operation to be performed after scanning the document depends on the scan operation setting you have selected in step 3. For details on how to modify the operation settings, refer tp the Scan Guide on-screen menual.

C) Scanning from an Application Software
You can scan an image from TWAIN-or- WIA (Windows XP only) complaint application software and handle the scanned image in the application software. For detailed operations, refer to the Scan Guide (on-screen manual).

If you;ve installed the MP Navigator software from the CD, then you should be able to press the scan button on the printer with your Mac connected and the MP navigator will open automatically on your Mac ready to scan. You can also try going into Preview (the Mac app) and from the file menu select Import... and it should open a scan window.  Hope this helps!
