Camera was dropped-- "Lens error-restart camera" message

My Canon PowerShot 850 was dropped recently . . .it worked for a brief time afterward. But now when I try to use it, the lens makes a 'clicking' sound and the screen displays "Lens error--restart camera." Wondering if it is worth sending it in to be fixed--how big a repair am I facing? The camera is still listed at amazon.com at $379, but the newer replacement version is about $100 cheaper.

Even i have the same problem. I bought that camera in US and now i am India. Warranty is also over for that camera. When i contacted service center, folks there told me that the Optical Unit in the camera is spoiled and not correctable and needs to be replaced and which cost $150. Just looking is the problem is very serious and shall i trust the service center folks.

If it is still under warranty , please repair it.
If it is out of warranty. Try to get a quote, it the quote is more than 50% of original value , forget it.
For digital camera's they die like flies. New ones are better and cheaper anyway.

'Lens error please restart the camera' msg displaying

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

LENS ERROR, RESTART CAMERA...

CANON IXUS 561
Lens sometimes does not extend and error message 'lens error restart camera' appears when camera is turned on. This does not work without several tries and much button pressing. Problem is not caused by finger(s) in front of lens barrel.

Lens Error. Restart Camera. Camera gives this error message and then shuts off. I can't access photos or function buttons. What can I do?

Press the "MENU" button and navigate to the reset command and reset the camera. That may get the camera to function properly.
