The thump is probably the motor trying to start followed by the burning smell of the belt slipping. See if something is jammed, but the most likely thing there is a bad transmission.

We have Maytag washer- new- model #MVWB765FW3. There is a thump from the hot water connection on the wall every time washer fills. I'm wary of water hammer. Is this something to be concerned about?

Yes, the thump is water hammer caused by the solenoid shutoff valve in the washer closing abruptly when the tub is full. Water hammer stresses the piping joints and could eventually cause a leak. First, make sure that the piping is supported properly to restrain any excessive movement. If the thumping persists, you'll need a plumber to install an accumulator or 'dead end' pipe in the line to help dampen the shock of suddenly stopping the flow of water.

My roper top loading washer agiatates and spins out the water, however, when it finishes the spin cycle it makes a thump thump thump sound for about 8-10 secs. It is like it is trying to stop but is...

Hi, Welcome to FixYa.
Based on your description this is what it sounds like. 1) The basket drive block has worn or come loose and the spin tub from the basket drive is "clunking" as it skips by the notches in the block. 2) The basket drive spin tub may have broke from the hub/base or both are worn as a result of prolonged "thump, thump, thumping". Hopefully the prior not the later. **Unplug the washer from the wall before attempting any DIY service/repairs...safety first** You'll need to remove the agitator, (the cap) and then the 9/16" or 1/2" or possibly a 7/16" bolt in the center...it may look nothing like a bolt, it may be a plastic block but it still screws off counter-clockwise.

Pull the agitator and inspect the block/hub in the center directly below the agitator which holds the basket in place. if it looks worn or is out of place, you'll likely need a tech.

If you can tackle it yourself, the block number is #389140. You want to be sure the spin tube still has the two notches in it though, otherwise the changing of the block will be futile.

Check that, and let me know how it goes and what you find.

Good Luck macmarkus :)

Washer won't do anything but fill.

It is very likely that the motor has burned out. What happens is that the water solenoid allows water to fill to a certain point where a fill sensor stops it. The program then moves on to activate the motor which will agitate the wash. So when power is supplied to the motor, it tries to start, overheats because of a break down of insulation in the windings, and you smell burning. Replace the motor.

Kenmore Elite agitates, pumps water but does not always spin

could be several things with those symptoms, like your basket drive/clutch assembly has oil all over the pads. this generally occures when the agitator shaft seal leaks causing oil from the gearcase/transmission to splash onto the clutch pads, hence creating slippage. you may also have an item of clothing stuck/jamming the inner & outer basket. but since you mentioned it's not as pronounced with smaller loads, and you can "coax" it by turning the basket manually, i.e. push starting. I'd bet on the clutch. if it makes a "thump thump thump" noise as well during spin, it could be a worn drive block, as long as the spin tube isn't damaged, it's an easy fix too. back to the clutch though. just replacing or repairing the clutch though is only dealing with the end result of a larger problem not the source.

If you have a local repair person who does shop service they may be able to repair the gearcase and clutch for a fraction of replacing those parts, it's a common repair at our shop for around $100 because you don't have the "trip charge" most places charge. I'd walk you through it, but it's not a job most folks should tackle. pull the cabinet off first an determine if it's got oil on the clutch (you'll see evidence of oil splashed around if so)

good luck

Kenmore 110-91564100 Top Load Washer Problem

Sounds like my 91 Geo Merto LOL! Anywho when it washes the pump spins one way and water is basically thrown back into the tub, then when on spin it spins in the opposite direction and if there is a hose leak past the pump or the pump itself leaks it will come out of the drain system. As for the thump, check under the unit for anything that shouldnt be under there getting caught up in the mechanics. Let us know :-)
