SOURCE: Help please. can't print: paper light flashing even though there is paper in printer
To fix the NON EXISTANT paper jam: Status light is on, paper light is on - you can hear the paper feed trying to "grab" the paper, but it can't, and status light goes Red. Take out paper tray Reset the blue paper holders, move them tight against the paper so the paper is snug against all blue barriers. Cause: Somehow the blue paper holders got dislodged and the paper is not snug so the feeder is trying to grab paper that is slightly out of reach.
SOURCE: Brother HL-5240 drum light flashing
Normally clearing the drum count the machine has to be on open front cover as if to change the drum press and hold the button in for about 10 second then release and shut the door. This should reset the count if not please get back to me and I'll check the service manual to see if anything in that.
Thanks J
SOURCE: New HL-5240 printer red status light upon powering up
My HL-5240 did the same thing, Here is what I found:
Look at the back of the printer. Pull down the back cover. Look to the right and the left of the exposed internals of the printer and there should be another handle/knob you can pull down. Pull these both down simultaneously and check to make sure there isn't a piece of paper in there! This was a shock to me! My office printer was held up for days until I found this hidden door in the back! I felt like an idiot that it was from a stupid paper jam!

That series of lights indicates a main circuit board failure. You will need a shop to replace the main logic PCB. Could be caused by anything, static shock, bad input power from power strip or power failure, just plain CPU failure. If it's under warranty, 1 year since purchase, you need a Brother service center, out of warranty a new printer would cost less than repair.
SOURCE: Error flashes
I've read several posts on the "red flashing error light" on the Brother HL-2170W. I have mine hooked to a mac - but I'm sure the pc is the same way. One other previous post said look for a paper jam. Well, there are only a few places to look...and I found no paper jam UNTIL I removed the toner cartridge and looked UNDER the cartridge and VOILA, there was a paper jammed underneath. I removed it and I'm back in business. Normally paper jams when it is almost out of the printer and you can locate it by opening the back of the printer. Well, this one was "sneaky" and hid completely underneath the toner cartridge.
Hope this helps someone else...
