Freezer is freezing but fridge is not cold as it was

Hi. I have a frigidaire Model # FRT17G4BW1. The freezer part is 12 deg.F and the frig. part gets to 40 deg.F It should get much colder than this. It use to get colder in frige so I started checking the Temp. I found out that the Defrost Thermostat was not working so I chaned it, now that works fine also the timer works fine.I also removed the freezer control that regulates the air flow to the frig. (witch the fan works good) so I will get the most amount of air flow to the frige.I use to be able to keep the frig. control at 4.5 and it was keeping milk and water at a very cold temp. But now I have it set on 6 all the way and it is not near as cold. Do you think the compresor is just not putting out as it should? Thank You.....

Hi! in response to Sea Breeze Thanks for the fast response :) I have checked the defrost timer and it does work fine and the heater works fine as well. I have also checked it manualy with a scredriver and works fine I am not sure how often it goes in to defrost mode I am checking the time on that but I do know the timer works. After the cycle is done and the compresor comes on and then shuts off the temp is still not changing from 12-14 deg Fin freezer and 38-40 deg F in frige but keep in mind the temp control in the frig is set on 6 and it use to be on 4.5 and I could not put it much higher because it would freeze the eggs and things on the top shelf and it does not get that cold anymore. I did fine that after I removed the air flow control in freezer so I can get as much airflow with no restriction to the frige the temp did get a little colder but not much maybe 2 deg F also I cleand the coils they are on the back of the frige they had very little dust. I have changed the defrost thermostat because it was not working that was the first thing I checked and since that change I have been watching the temp for 4 days and no change. Any other things you can think of please let me know... Thank You........

Hey Thanks again for the help. I found the problem it was the thermostat it was shutting the compresor off before getting to a very cold temp. What I did was take a thermostat off one of my other refrigirators I have rental property so I have plenty of refrigiratos to take parts from and it is working good now the compresor stays running longer now to get the temp very low. Thats funny how the defrost thermostat and the temp control thermostat went out at about the same time. Well thanks again you all were very help full :) Thanks..........Corey

Sounds like defrost timer is not putting the refrigerator in defrost every 8 hours. You freezer should be below -5 degrees. Also the condenser beneath the refrigerator possibly needs cleaning. First slowly turn the defrost timer clockwise until freezer goes in defrost. You should hear the sound of crackling noise in freezer after about one minute into defrost. If timer does not come out of defrost or does not turn itself then replace it. Let me know what you find, Thanks Sea Breeze

If you have done all the things you have listed, it points me to a slow freon leak. Signs of this will be continuous compressor running and ice build up on the evaporator coils. Many times the leak will be inside the freezer section.. Sometimes in lower condenser coils. The leak can be found and repaired but you will need to have the remaining freon removed, install a filter drier in discharge side of compressor, pull an absolute vacuum and recharge will same type freon that the refrigerator came with. Doing all these things will require a skilled person to recharge and repair the refrigerator.A refigerator uses only a few ounces of freon, no more and no less.

Hope we can solve this, let me know, Sea Breeze

Check compressor start capacitor and temp. thermostat also to make sure. I missed that the compressor turns off too soon before low temperature is achieved.

Check top of compressor to see if too hot to touch then unplug the refrigerator and straight wire the two wires to the back of thermostat and this should cause the refrigerator to cool all time indicating that thermostat is bad. Also the probe on the thermostat may be in a bad location pull away from where it need to mount. Let me know what you find.

My refrigerator is too cold and is freezing my food

Hello,

Most times this is a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger ( small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly making the fridge run too long is something else to check for the plastic air deflector at the top rear of the frig had been knocked off. I replaced it and all is OK. I thought you might add this to your suggestion list. As you know, the deflector directs the freezer air toward the front of the frig and the rear of the cold control, which is now functioning properly. Luckily, I found this before rushing out to purchase the control

Hope this helps.....

Freezer not freezing food, and fridge not getting cold.

Hi, both compartment of the refrigerator (freezer & fridge) not freezing and getting cold means you have low or empty freon (gas) in the compressor of the refrigerator and you need to refill it as soon as possible.

Take care

Frigidaire refrigerator model #FRS26R4AW7 is freezing up

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

The freezer is cold, but frig will only go down to 41-43 deg rang

Make sure both condenser and evaporator fans are running. Is it possible that you might have something blocking the air flow from the freezer to the fridge?! Can you hear the fan running up on top?

I have a Kenmore Cold Spot fridge, freezer on top. Fridge is warm, and freezer keeps freezing up on sides and bottom. I cleaned it all out, defrosted it, and it still freezes up and fridge still won't get...

Is this a self defrost model? Frost inside the freezer could be an air leak around the door gasket. Remove the back panel in the freezer and completely defrost the coils. Is the fan running in the freezer. That will make the frig not be cool. With the door closed peek in the gasket to make sure the light is shutting off, this will warm a frig also.

Freezer to cold refrigerator not cold enough

sounds like your defrost timer is not working properly . Most fridge/freezers the fridge gets cooled from the cool air from the freezer . But when the defrost timer is not working properly the section between the fridge and freezer freezes up and hence doesnt allow the flow of cool air into the fridge. The defrost timer can be easily replaced.

Freezer is cold but the frig side is not???

Hi Gotzd,  If you open the fresh food side (not the freezer), and look to the upper left side you will see a plastic shroud or cover. Behind that cover is a printed circuit board (p.c. board)   and a damper motor. That motor brings cold air from the freezer to the fresh food side. The whole damper assembly may need to be replaced. That also includes the cold controls for both sides of the "fridge".  Home Depot Parts and Accessories has the part available. 800.378.5830. Call, give them your model number, and the description, they will locate the part number for you. This MAY be the solution for you, it was for me. Hope this helps, better yet, Hope you've fixed already.

Freezer freezes OK, frig compartment doesnt get cold

Does the unit only have one compressor (black round object on back of unit). If yes then sounds as though you have lost some refrigerant (just enough to keep the freezer happy). If no (ie two compressors) check if both compressors hot. If both hot then have major problem if one cold then have a thermostat gone. Personally I think you have lost gas from your description, if so then you are looking at a dead fridge freezer. Hope this is of some help.
