Tip & How-To about Refrigerators

Water Running in Refrigerator from Freezer

If you have water running down into your refrigerator from your freezer it may be because the hole under the defrost coil is blocked with ice. There is an easy way to eliminate this problem in many refrigerators. Follow these simple steps to stop this problem from happening.

  1. Empty out freezer compartment and open up access to evaporator coils and defrost coil.
  2. Use hair dryer or heat gun to melt any ice that is around coils and in hole to bottom of refrigerator that normally drains the water out of the compartment. Towels or a shop vac may be needed to clean up water as the ice melts.
  3. Blow through hole to make sure that it is free of debris and ice.
  4. Use a piece of bare uninsulated 14 Ga. Copper or Aluminum wire. Place one end of the wire into the hole as far as possible and then cut off enough to wrap a turn or two around the defrost coil.

Now when the freezer goes into it’s defrost cycle a small amount of heat will be transferred by the wire down the hole to make sure that it remains ice free. This will solve your drainage problems with your freezer defrosting and water running into the refrigerator compartment.

The refigerator does not get cold. Long term ice forms in Freezer blocking through holes. When first pugged in seems to circulate air to refrigerator

The drain at the bottom of the freezer under the coils is clogged. Remove Icemaker if you have one, remove bottom floor of freezer, remove back panel of freezer. Use hairdryer to melt ice. ALL ICE MUST BE REMOVED. Use hot water and a turkey baster to get ice out of drain hole located about middle under coils. Be patient, do not chip ice with sharp tool. After ice is removed pour hot water down drain hole. Water must come out in drain pan under refrigerator(you may have to take front grille off to get to pan)

If Ice returns after a few weeks, you need to look at defrost thermostat which is usually clipped on cold coil at back of freezer. This part or the defrost timer could be defective.

My freezer works but my refrigerator does not. What the problem?

This can be caused by the drain hole below freezer coil being blocked by ice. You MUST remove all ice in drain under freezer coil. Use turkey baster to squirt hot water into hole and use hairdryer to defrost. Possible defrost thermostat is defective. Unit never goes into defrost, ice forms on coil and in floor of freezer. After defrosting may work OK for a week or two but gradually gets warmer because ice is blocking ports where cool air gets to refrig. May also have water in refrig box. Can also be caused by defective defrost timer.
