The PowerShot S1 doesn't take SDHC cards, only CF cards. If you're asking about some other camera, not all of the cameras deigned for SD cards take the higher-capacity SDHC cards.

SOURCE: Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital Camera will not

The S2 IS is designed to work with SD cards, not SDHC cards. While an SDHC card will fit into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Normally, you can only insert an SD card one way. Try a different SD card or check to see if the SD card you're using has the "write protect" switch on. If that's not the issue try formatting the card in your PC and then format it in the camera.

Your older camera can only work with 2GB or smaller standard SD cards. It is not capable of recognizing the newer format 4GB or higher SDHC cards. Fortunately, old format 2GB SD cards are relatively inexpensive these days, and may be purchased on Amazon if your local store no longer carries them.

I cannot format the memory card using my Canon Powershot SX110 IS Digital Camera. The option is greyed out in the menu and an error message saying that the card is locked is on the screen. THE CARD IS NOT...

You don't give any details about the card that is not working in your camera. I suspect it is not an SD card but an SDHC (high capacity) card. "SD" cards larger than about 1GB are actually SDHC cards. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different electrically. Many cameras won't work with SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

If this is the case, try a card of 1GB or less. This will hold plenty of pictures, 60 times as many as the 16MB card. If you really need more space then just carry a spare 1GB card and swap when you fill the first one.

You need to go to the menu screen, scroll over to the tools option, scroll down to format and format the memory card. I just had this same problem and this is what worked for us!

Maybe it is having trouble with the size of the memory. Memory cards have grown enormously in capacity in the last couple of years, and even relatively new cameras may not be able to cope with the memory size of the newest cards.

SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

I have a canon powershot SD400 elph. Camera menu

I'm guessing you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with your camera.

You'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.

Canon camera won't accept SD memory card

It's a good bet that anything 4GB or greater is a SDHC card (look on the card, see if SDHC is written there). Your A530 was designed before the new SDHC format came out. Sorry, but your camera will not recognize this type of card. Recommend instead that you get a 2GB standard SD card. They're relatively inexpensive these days.
