many things can make it smell bad wash filter top and lower in hot soapy water and rise well and dry well in sun
wash bin and all it's parts in hot soapy water and dry well
clean brush roll and check for any bad smells in head
could be from motor over heating or near to failing if above does not get rid of smell i would say it's the motor
Hi Joan, it's Jack at Dyson.
If your DC17's bin base has come apart from the rest of the clear bin assembly, it would be best if our experts can talk you through refitting this over the phone when you have your vacuum to hand.
At your earliest convenience I would encourage you to give us a call on 1-866-693-9766 (US) or 1-877-397-6622 (CA) so we can help. We'll look forward to speaking with you.
Hi Jodi, it's Jack at Dyson.
Like most Dyson vacuums, DC17 is engineered to shut itself off for protection if it starts to overheat. If this happens after a period of use, or when you try to use the wand and hose, it's likely this will be caused by a blockage somewhere in the machine.
We'd like to provide further assistance and to help you check for any obstructions within the machine. When you have your vacuum easily to hand, please call us on 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).
We'll look forward to speaking with you.
Hi Carol, it's Jack at Dyson.
The DC17 upright is not a cordless vacuum - are you able to confirm the model number of your Dyson vacuum so we can ensure we're giving you relevant advice? The model number will begin DC--, followed by two numbers.
You can also find advice and support online by visiting http://www.dyson.com clicking 'Support', then selecting your machine from the list.
If you'd prefer, you can speak to our experts directly by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).
Hi Shirley, it's Jack at Dyson.
It doesn't look like your question is about a Dyson vacuum. You might like to resubmit it under the correct category to be sure of some helpful advice.

Hi, if you go onto you tube and type in how to replace dyson dc17 animal switch you should find on there or try espares they have different videos and i am sure i seen it on one of the sources given just a week ago.
It could be one or more of a few causes. Easiest to check is the belt and/or brush roll. There are two switches for the brush roll. Both must be working properly. One is by the main power switch and the other is in the motor compartment. If the problem still persists check the brush bar motor in the power nozzle assembly
