Whenever i turn the system on the display immediately says 125 degrees. i can lower the temperature but it still thinks it it that hot, yet the water is cold. the system won't turn on. also noted last time i did have it on (months ago) the temperature was scalding, even though the display said 92 degrees. thinking the control board is bad. looked at it and didn't see any burnt-looking parts. i have replaced this board once. sta-rite heater
The sensor from Sta-rite cost 70 dollars Put a 3.5 k ohm resister(1 dollar) in line with a 2 dollar flute sensor on standard gas water heaters and yu have a new and better flute sensor. You will have to drill a slightly bigger hole in the flute. No problem
Sounds like the temp sensor is bad. Sta-rite Heater
You probably have a bad sensor. If you have a MAX-E Therm heater, then the part number is 42001-0053S.
I changed the temperature sensor and it fixed the problem.

I have a similar problem. My displays 91 degrees when the temp is actually cooler, shuts off at 104 degrees with the water still luke warm. Please let me know if you get a solution.
The only sensor i found in the sta-rite manual was the stack flue sensor, which appears to measure temperature of the air leaving the heater. the manual says this item "shuts down the heater
if the flue gas temperature reaches 500° F". Not sure how that would cause the temp to show 125 degrees if the unit is not even starting. is there another sensor i can't locate? or if this is making it show 125, then would that prevent the unit from starting? Is there a way to test this? thanks for your answers.
Reads 125 all the time.
