I've seen these obd1 gms sometimes have an issue with the throttle position sensor and not throw a code. That's probably what is going on in this case here. The TPS is a rheostat that gets wear over time. It probably has a wear spot at partial throttle that is making it "lose position" and it finds itself again when you get out of that wear spot.
Start and crank are two different things. If it will not crank sometimes, it could be the neutral safety switch or a dead spot in the starter, or something in the key switch. Have you checked anything yet ?
Make sure the MAF sensor is working properly. If ok, Check all intake hoses for cracks or leaks as this will cause lean codes. Other issues that may cause this is faulty cam sensor or if timing is off!!
spray fuel starter fluid in the throttle body.if it runs,it is a fuel issue.
check the voltage at the fuel pump wires, should be 12 volts.
bang on the tank with a piece of 2x4 and see if the pump starts .
sometimes the pump has a dead spot.
check for spark with a spark tester.
check the plugs, wires, cap rotor, timing, and grounds first.
could be, unless your battery is dying. a nearly dead battery will make clicking noises while it is cranking. if you keep forcing it by turning the key from "run" to "crank" and it gets it to start it may be a dead spot on the starter.
