I have that same model and that same problem. In fact, this problem was there from the start! That's why I haven't touched my Brother Xr7700 for years. This time around I changed the needle and everything went to hell!

If you have pattern dials set correctly then I might guess that one or more sets may have been missed when the thread was being set up in the machine. most of these models show either arrows or numbers for each or way the thread needs to be routed.

If you're using the horizontal spool pin, be sure the spool is inserted onto the spool pin in the proper orientation. Per the manual; Set the thread spool on the spool pin so that the thread unwinds from the front of the spool.

Horizontal spools require the spool cap be equal or greater in size than the spool diameter. Using a smaller cap may result in the thread snagging on the spool edge.

Be sure to follow threading instructions exactly.

Always try different manufacturer thread to eliminate the possibility of weak or bad thread.

If the spool pops in, you may be able to find a replacement where sewing machine parts are sold.

If it was a molded to a platform, a thread stand may be a less expensive method to use. You can find a single cone thread stand with sewing notions.

A client of mine had this same problem. The driver seemed to be installed correctly in device manager (start, run, type "devmgmt.msc") press enter. I tried many things to get it to work. Then I downloaded the Windows Vista setup files on the brother site. That fixed the problem. I will post full step by step instructions @ http://rivertownnetworking.com

Depends what you plan to do with the machine. If you expect to do simple straight or zig-zag stitching, perhaps sewing garments or home decor items, a simple mechanical machine with a few decorative stitches may be sufficient. However, if you decide you want to get into computerized embroidery, etc., then a computerized machine with more capabilities may be a better choice. Of course, with that decision is the price. Just go with the best value for your money. If you are a beginner, perhaps a simple machine to start with may be a good choice until you advance your sewing abilities to a point when you can consider a machine with more capabilities. If you decide you really don't like sewing, at least you haven't put out a great amount of money. ...

Had the same problem here. Took it apart and found that several tracks in the ribbon cable from the keypad to the circuit board on which the LCD display is mounted were broken hence keypad needs to be replaced. Its part number is XA4331002 and available online from Sewing World. Have just finished fitting the replacement and keypad and sewing machine are working A1 OK.

Try turning unit on with foot control unplugged. If it starts on it's own with foot pedal disconnected then internal board failure (smoke).

The upper thread could be tangled. Remove the upper thread and any loose threads. Raise the pressure foot, raise the needle to its highest position and rethread the machine.
Remove the bobbin and bobbin case to clean any lint or loose threads. Install the bobbin case so that the projection on it aligns with the spring. Then install the bobbin into the bobbin case.
The needle could be bent. Replace the needle making sure the flat side is facing the back.

The motor locked up because the thread is tangled. Solution: Remove the tangled thread before continuing the operation. Clean the bobbin case to remove the tangled thread. After cleaning the bobbin case, insert the bobbin case properly. If the needle is bent or broken, replace the needle. Then, thread the upper thread properly, and continue the operation.

Lift the machine, turn it upside down and shake it. That's how we do it here in the shop.

Appears to be the same bae machine with a slight difference in the needle position selector.

they need to be checked, may need to be timed or replaced, could also be a problem with the hook and hook race. or see if the feed dogs are in the up position to sew, in the down position is for darning.
