My needle goes side to side but the stitches are straight stitches on a brother sewing machine
So your set up to sew zig/zag and only get the zig or the zag : )
Could be top thread tension is too high. Switch to a straight stitch and reduce tension until top thread starts to appear on bottom. Then go back to zig/zag and see if it sews properly.
If still dropping stitches, check the needle is not bent and is fully inserted into the holder. Clean the bobbin, hook, and race per machine instructions. Try reducing the stitch width and see if that makes any difference. If still not right then timing may be off.

My brother 3034D with the foot pedal fully depressed is barely operating. What might be causing it
- Set all tension to 1.
- Remove all the thread.
- Disengage the trimmer.
- Turn it by hand.
- If it is free, try your foot petal again. It it runs, learn how to thread. It only takes one mistake to bind up the machine.
- If still slow, borrow a foot petal (or take to a shop and use one there). If still slow, bad motor.
- It it does not turn free, open the case (but look on Youtube first):
- It might need lube. Use a LITTLE BIT of oil on the inner bearings but none on the motor.
- Cutter too tight. Loosen.
- Wad of thread inside.
- Something bent.
- Out of timing. Again, see Youtube.

Brother model jx2517
Try re threading the needle. and try a new needle. Make sure th thread and needle are the size required for the material used. Make sure the needle tension is correct for the material. and also that the thread is not old and the same thread in both bobbin and needle.
