The agitator in your Maytag Dependable Care washer uses a back-and-forth motion to move your clothes from the top of the washtub to the bottom and back to the top again. The fins on the side of the agitator help facilitate this movement. When one of the fins sustains damage or the agitator fails to move, you must remove the agitator to make the necessary repairs.Disconnect your Maytag Dependable Care washer from the electrical wall outlet. Turn off the valves supplying water to the appliance.
2
Open the washer's lid to access the agitator. Look for a 1/4-inch hex screw recessed in an opening about three-quarters down the side of the agitator.
3
Insert a 1/4-inch nut driver into the opening in the side of the agitator. Fit the nut driver over the head of the screw. Turn the screw counterclockwise to remove it.Grab the bottom of the agitator with both hands. Pull the agitator from the bottom of the washtub.
Disconnect power then lift the lid open. Pry the dispenser assembly off the agitator top then remove the agitator bolt by turning it counterclockwise. Once the bolt is off, lift the agitator then install the new agitator in place. Secure it with the agitator bolt then put the dispenser assembly back into position. Lifting the basket helps budge the agitator and remove it more easily.
Hi Bill... It takes all of 5 minutes (if that) to change the agitator. You pop off the fabric softener dispenser on the top of the agitator, then reach down inside and undo the plastic wingnut that secures the agitator down and then simply lift if off.
As for issues with using it with broken fins, you could end up with some clothes damage, especially to delicate items, if you continue to use it that way.
you can remove the agitator. there are 3 steps to this. 1.take off the top plastic part of the agitator. 2 remove secondary plastic piece from inside of agitator 3. there will be a 7/16 bolt inside and will be deep so you will need a long extension to reach it. hold the fins of the agitator and remove the bolt with a ratchet. once the bolt is out you will be able to lift the agitator up.
being a maytag about 30 years old i would say the belt is broke or transmission is locked up ,,,, if it was a newer style you may have difference problem that could be easier repaired
does it spin?
sounds like your coupling is broke. It takes the place of the belt if it breaks it won't spin or agitate. it will still pump though.
