first check if there is noise on your phoneline , that is one of the major causes of failures in fax transmissions

did u try to do a hard reset to clear this error?

From TechSupportForum.com --this worked for me -- change the settings: Settings>Device Settings>Fax Settings>Transmission Settings>Check RX Fax Information>OFF.

Follow these menus on your printer.

Settings> Device Settings> Fax Settings> Transmission Settings> Check RX Fax Information> OFF

its a message from the modem in the fax
make sure the line is ok and he cable connected to the right place
if not helping than its better to send to service

Two Issues:

1. The Transmission Speed of the MX860 may be too fast.
Solution: on FAX Menu go to Settings>Device Settings>FAX Settings>Transmission Settings >"TX start speed" and change to 14400 or lower (14400 worked for me).

2. The recipient FAX machine may be receiving by a different number than the one you dial. This may occur if you dial a free-calling no.
Solution: Go to Transmission Settings as above>"Check RX fax info" and turn it to OFF. This disables the mismatch issue.

I had the same problem. Solution? I will sound stupid, but it worked for me. Check every phone cable. Unplug and replug it. I solved my problem by making my connections simpler. I think, one of my splitter was faulty.

I still not understand why. I tried to fax without any phones plug-on and it was not working neither.

I'm with "videotron.ca" for my phone line and I unplugged the line from the modem too, then replug it. Maybe it was just that!

A lot of people seem to have this problem. I called Canon twice and they made me change some setting in my printer but their solutions was not working. I put all the setting back to what they was and it still working now.

you need to go into rx setting and turn rx report back to on,

and go to TX settings and turn Tx report on.

this can be found in menu, device settings, fax setting, (tx and rx report will be shown) change it from there
