The paper is constantly jamming when we try to make copies. It seems to be related to the paper feeding process, as fiddling with the tray sometimes magically, but temporarily fixes the problem. Usually a grunting/scraping sound occurs just before the paper jam light comes on and we have to open up the machine and pull out the crinkled piece of paper that obviously didn't feed correctly. Is there something we can do to fix this or should we haul it in to a professional?

The paper you are using that’s the problem if the room is humid that would cause your paper to not feed properly. Try using different paper a heavier paper or making sure the paper isn’t stuck together. Also check the wheels on the rollers.

The fuser is the problem. Most likely the fuser will need to be rebuilt or replaced. Google a business called The Parts Drop. they have either the parts or the unit.
You may just have to take the fuser out and remove a badly jammed piece of paper in that module. Shut the machine off for a half an hour. Remove the back cover. You will then see on the left side a black plastic bracket with 3 plugs on it. Disconnect those 3 plugs. Then open the right side door and toward the top is the fuser. It has yellow caution HOT labels on it. There are 2 silver phillips screws holding it in. Remove the screws and then remove the fuser unit and see if there is a paper in there. There are 2 screws that you can remove and the fuser will kind of fold open to inspect for bent fingers or one out of place.
Each printer has a sensor that determines when there is no paper, on cheaper printers like deskjets it tries to feed the paper and when it fials it gives this error. The feeder for the printer is most likley bad, replcaement is the most cost effective solution , repairing it would be more then a new unit.
Based on your description of what's happening, especially the part about the paper sometimes skewing or jamming from the back also, it sounds like there may be a small piece of paper caught back there in the roller/feed area. You may want to try feeding a piece of heavy paper through, try from the top/back first, and see if it will push whatever may be stuck in there out. Also, try opening the door on the back and use a strong light to see if you can see anything in there. Be careful if you try to remove anything, not to pry against the rollers or feed mechanism. Maybe use a long tweezers. Good luck!

I suggest you get a sheet of Card Stock (Heavy
paper) and place it in the feed way. Then press the print
button applying a slight amount of pressure on the Card Stock so it
will feed through the printer. The reason for this, is in some cases I
have been able to clear the paper track of debris that was deposited there
over time.
Worth a try, as I have fixed a number of printers this
way, saving costly repairs.
Hope this helps.Bud
Does the fault clear when you open/close? If it does you probably don't have a jam. Does the machine begin to try to make copies, then stop-if so it has probably failed to feed off the tray, hence the jam message. If this is the case, pull out the paper tray, check for obstructions, clean feed rollers and try again. Are there "skid marks on the paper(indicating the rolls have turned?) If so rolls could be dirty/worn. If no skid marks, can you determine if the rolls did in fact turn? Go from there
