Ethernet light at the back of the computer does not light up, also does not recognise cable.

Check the dell website for support and drivers for your computer. go to www.dell.com and put your service tag into the proper section.

You either have the wrong driver for your network card or the network card is not functioning. You need to be sure the card is seated properly in the card slot first.
Chedk the device manager to see if the network card is recongnized. Go to your My Computer icon, right click and go to properties and then the hardware tab.
Look under network cards and see if you card is visible and if the driver is loaded for this card. If the card is there, try to download an updated driver for your network card.

I hope that you find this information helpful, if so, please leave feedback for me.

Thank You,

Brian .

Replaced hard drive on HP dv4000. Install XP Pro and drivers from recovery disk. Updated to SP3. Do not have 1394 net adapter listed in network connections. Connected external hard drive to firewire port...

I would check in device manager (control panel) and see if the network card is listed. It probably has a yellow exclamation point next to it. If there is an exclamation point there, then right click the card and click uninstall. Next, using your wifi to access the internet, download the latest network card driver from the PC vendor website / Motherboard vendor site / discrete network card site.
Install the network card driver and you should be back in business.

I NEED LAN CARD DRIVER FOR D600 LAPTOP

If you want the driver for your Dell laptop, the best place to get it is at support.dell.com.You need to input the model you have, ( which I believe to be a Latitude D600), and choose drivers.
On the driver page, choose your computer's language, network for category and all for importance.
This brings up about 20+ possible downloads.
You then need to find the ones that apply to the network card in your computer that are labeled as drivers.
Anything labeled as firmware is optional and will upgrade the operation of your card if applied. Utilities are also optional and are usually used to change operational settings of the card.
There will be only one driver for your card that you have to download, everything else is optional.
Once you have the driver, look at the device manager in WinXP.
If the network card [ethernet adapter] is not showing there, then there should be an unknown device.
Right click on the unknown device and choose update drivers and point the update wizard to the driver you downloaded.
That should solve the problem.

Network card

A lot of network adaptors can work using generic drivers. Myself, I download drivers from manufacturer's websites such as acer (the maker of my laptop) and found that the drivers they provide can be used on a lot of different systems. I found a website that provides a list of network adapter drivers.. have a look on this site. I would suggest the realtek driver, but if you can find out the model or manufacturer of your card, it would be a lot easier
