Did you try to connect AUDIO OUT from your TV to AUDIO IN on your package?
SOURCE: Hooking Up The Theatre System to the TV and Cable.
this means you likeley have your cable box connected correctly, if you have it connected to a standard definition input (AV in or coaxial) make sure the that the dvd player is not in progressive mode.

I would suggest that you smash
Philips HTS w/a hammer!
I had better sound from TV alone! Only 2 speakers put out sound from TV. Recordings from DVR can not be heard very well w/all volumes at max. System sucks! You get what you pay for! $2500 LCD TV sounds worse w/Philips HTS than my son's $300 TV! ALL cables hooked up as instucted!!!!

You might name the model of the TV.
If the TV is a monitor it doesn't have any audio capabilites. What you should do, and owners of monitors must do, is get the best digital or analog audio from the same source the TV would get it - cable/sat/dvd/bd/game.
There is nothing to be gained by washing hi-fi multi-channel audio through a TV's sub-par audio electronics and turning it into grainy analog audio for consumption by higher-fi audio-specific equipment..
