I have a Frigidaire Professional Refrigerator. The code 5Y EF continually appear on the ice maker key pad. We have not been able to find an answer that is understandable.

Some anxers explain the heater/fan in back of panel is not defrosteing ice which in turn stops the fan.

Hello Christine, the actual code your getting is an SY EF failure code. No worries, it happens all the time. The SY stands for System and the EF stands for Evaporator Fan. That means the fan behind the freezer wall is not working properly. The fan may be froze up by water running down from the ice maker, or it just might be burned out. Not sure what model you have, so can't get you proper part number, but that's what that code means.

SOURCE: fan runs constantly, freezer ice melting, bottom drawer in refrig

  • If your refrigerator temperature is closer to 35 degrees, try turning the temperature up slightly.

  • If you find that the temperature varies a lot from the top shelf to the bottom (where it is coldest), try putting produce and other sensitive products on a higher shelf.

  • If the temperature is too low and you can't make it warmer by adjusting the thermostat, you probably have a defective thermostat. If so, you need to replace it, because they cannot be repaired. Other possible problems are a leak in the sealed (refrigerant) system, cold air migration (in side-by-side models) or a defective air damper. These problems can be quite difficult to locate and correct, we recommend you contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

SOURCE: water dispenser on front of refrigerator door does not dispense water. Ice Cube maker continues to make ice cubes. Defrosting doesn't fix problem.

Water dispensing solenoid is bad. You need to replace the solenoid valve. This typically is independent of the ice maker.

SOURCE: GE refrigerator, ice melts in ice bin

Since your refrig is cooling , I would replace the # 4 AND # 5 thermistors . The # 4 thermistor , tells the main control board , the temp of the coils , if they need defrosted , when they are thru defrosting . This thermistor is the 1 " long , torpedo looking piece , clipped on the top left of the coils , with 2 white wires going to it . Part number WR55X10025 . It would be advisable to also replace the # 5 thermistor , located at the bottom of the freezer , slightly in front of the drain , also with 2 white wires going to it , slid into a housing . This thermistor , is the freezer thermistor , which tells the control board , the freezer temp , when to cycle off , associated with the fan speed also .

    SOURCE: Ice maker stopped working

    Good day,
A step by step procedure should resolve your problem. If the dispenser is working, you can skip that step.

First step is to take a small paper cup of water and fill the cavity until it is near full. With the ice maker turned on, close freezer door and wait 3 hours to see if it harvests. If not, the ice maker is bad, and must be replaced. If the cubes harvest then.......
    Three possibilities.
    1. The water supply from the house is not delivering water to the water valve. Shut off the house at the meter, disconnect the line going to the water valve, and with the line pointed into a bucket, have someone turn the valve back on for a 15 second count. The water should come out smartly. If not, the line and it's fittings will have to be replaced.
    2. The fill tube from the back of the machine that feeds water into the back of the ice maker is frozen up. You will have to remove the ice maker to visually inspect that tube. If blocked, it needs to be defrosted, but use caution. Too much heat too fast will start to melt plastic and vinyl parts you don't want melted.
If this is the case, then once cleaned out, you will have to change the water valve located in the back bottom rear of the machine because it is leaking during the off cycle.
    3. If everything checks O.K. up to this point, you will have to purchase and install a new water valve, and install it.
P.S. Under very rare occasions the electric circuity in the ice maker will fail to send a signal to the water valve. Although rare, it can happen, in which case the best option is to replace the ice maker and water valve.

SOURCE: Frigidaire Gallery Professional Series -

you will need to replace the water inlet valve, this runs your water and ice,, before you replace it take your water line off and hold it in a pot, then have someone turn the water back on , this will let you know for sure you are getting water to the valve,, if no water comes out then you have a water line prob,, have that fixed then hook it back up and turn it on, then you will need to run the water for about 2 -3 minutes to purge the air out of the line,,, if you rplace the valve you will need to purge also

Frigidaire gallery refrigerator lights blinking continuously like disco lights

The EF code typically indicates a problem with the evaporator fan motor or a sensor related to the fan. Since you already replaced the evaporator fan motor and the code didn't go away, it's possible that there is still an issue with the sensor or with the wiring that connects the fan to the control board. You may want to check the wiring and make sure all connections are secure.

The blinking lights inside the fridge could be a sign of a problem with the control board. When you replaced the control board, did you make sure to program it according to the manufacturer's instructions? If the programming isn't correct, it could cause the lights to blink.

It's also possible that the new control board is defective or not compatible with your particular refrigerator model. You may want to double-check that you have the correct part number and that it's designed for your specific model.

If you've tried all of these troubleshooting steps and the problem persists, it may be time to call in a professional technician to diagnose and repair the issue.

    Problem with refrigerator panel

'Make and Model' in all questions please. Generic answer for Frigidaire units.

The 5Y EF error code indicates an issue with or between the fan motor and the control board. I suggest check the wiring between evaporator fan and control board. Make sure everything is plugged in securely. You can also resent the appliance but cutting power off to the appliance for 5 mins to see if the code clears.

My Frigidaire refrigerator that is in our cold garage has an error code of 5Y on the freezer side and EF on the frige side. What does this mean?

5Y ef means evaporator fan issue. Could be wiring to the evap fan as well.

From the site: "I had a 5y ef error and it ended up being the control board."

Code on door of French door reads error message 5y ce. sounds like it is still running but no light inside or ice maker not working.

Thank you for your post, Carol!

I understand that your Frigidaire refrigerator is displaying an error code of "5Y CE". However it appears that "5Y CE" is an invalid error code. I have noticed the code of "SY CE" and that means there is a communication error at power up. I would recommend performing a reset on your refrigerator and you can do that by unplugging the power cord for at least ten minutes. If that does not correct your issue it could be possible that there is an issue with your main control board, wiring harness, or user interface board. I would then suggest having a professional technician out to perform a proper diagnosis and repair. This will help you avoid any unnecessary part purchases. Hopefully this is helpful. -Matt

My refrigerator is not keeping temp and there is a code on the water/ice machine reads S(or 5)y EF. What does this code indicate?

If I'm not mistaken EF error code stands for Evaporator Fan which is the fan motor in the back of the freezer section. That would explain the noise you heard. The fan could possibly be frozen or stuck or the motor actually went bad and needs replaced. Without that fan running you will get very little cooling.

What does the error code 5y EF mean on my Frigidaire refrigerator

    Good Morning Friend,

I understand you are receiving an "SY EF" code on your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FRS3R5EMB. The "SY EF" code stands for system error with the evaporator fan. This possibly means that there is something going on with your evaporator fan or it could possibly be a false error code. . I suggest resetting your appliance, by either unplugging it or shutting the power off at your home's circuit breaker, for 3-5 minutes. I ask that you please follow up with a comment on the post, at your convenience, to advise if further troubleshooting is needed or if your appliances status has changed successfully.

Hi M - I am happy to assist you! Error codes SY/EF is commonly refer to a failure with the evaporator fan circuit. Let's try resetting the refrigerator by either unplugging it or flipping the household circuit breaker to the off position. It is important to wait roughly ten minutes and then turn the unit back on.
