The camera is firing just fine.. lights are flashing, but no matter what setting it is on the shot comes out pitch black. Yes the lends cap is off the lens.
Have to checked to see if your exposure compensation settings are set to way underexpose your images? This will override all settings and darken your photos. Does it do it when you have the camera set on auto and/or manual? If not, and the images don't come out in the camera and on a computer then there may be an issue with the auto aperture in the lens. Try a different lens and see if it persists. There could also be a shutter issues but you'd usually get an error message with both these problems.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Your camera has the know issue of Stuck shutter, whichhappens after some time (weeks or months) thata camera is notused.
Unfortunately the repair of it requires a complete disassembly of the camera, including the lens, fix it, and then put back together everything.
Definitely requires th skills, tools and experience to do it, so it's recommended that a professional camera repair center is performing this type of repair.
If you look for a reliable and low cost repair service for it, you can look in ebay for such repair services.
Example, look for seller ID Great_items_2004 or with the keywords "Shutter black S2".

Sounds like a loose or poor connection of the screen's flex cables, a very common problem for your model camera. The A630's vari-angle screen is a great option for a camera, but with this moveable screen, the screens data and power cables can and do wiggle loose. It is actually relatively easy to fix by just reseating these cables, but will require opening the back face of the screen of your camera. Please see this other person who had a similar problem.
