When you say "crackling sounds" do you mean electrical sounding crackles or something like gears grinding? If it's the first and especially if you smell something electrical then immediately send it back to Canon for repairs. If there's a short in the wiring or capacitor it could melt or worse. If it's more of a mechanical sound it may be debris lodged in the release mechanisim.

Remove the battery for 15 mins then insert the battery and go to the memu and set the Date and Time etc.

The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with every picture in its EXIF metadata. Any photo viewing/editing program should be able to display this data. I'm afraid not. The camera does not have any memory to store photos. You can take one photo and look at it on the screen to see how the camera works, but this is primarily for demonstration purposes. Shooting without a memory card is like shooting an old film camera without any film loaded. You can go through the motions of taking a picture, but nothing is stored permanently.
