Doesnt matter what setting, size of load, or empty. My washing makes a loud thumping noise at the end of its spin cycle when the basket is slowing down. If I spin the drum by hand there is a noise once per turn, if that helps at all.
What is the model number of your unit?
NTW4500VQ Amana. my husband took the agitator off to reveal the spanner nut. there is metal shavings on the drive block. It seems the notches on the part that the drive block sits on are wore or stripped. I dont know what part that would be but now when we spin the drum we can see that the noise is when the tub turns its going up on on where the notches should be and slipping down off them. he is going to the parts store now.
Replacing the drive block and basket drive shaft today. They were both totally worn out and the cause of the noise. $120 later and we have a noise free washer again.

SOURCE: Thumping sound at the end of spin cycle.
Rankine, sounds more like a worn drive block that sits under the basket. Usually the brake will not make a thumping sound. Attached is a couple of pictures. Check this out first...Catriver..post back.

Remove washer cabinet (easy to remove)and check that "base pads" (there are 3 pads, located under the main tub)are not worn. In case they are worn (even one of them), you should replce them all. Good luck !!

Yes the brakes are grabbing too hard....I will sometimes lubricate them....Or replace the basket drive assy. You do know how to take the cabinet off i take it??
SOURCE: thumping and banging
make sure all shipping pins are out the tub should move all around from side to side if it level still bangs its eather the balance ring top basket are there 3 slides on a plate above the motor just put some silacone oil on tham move around

it could be the break above the transmission. it engages what looks like break shoes when the machine is not spinning. if these are worn down to the rivets then it will make this noise. it requires a special tool to replace.

Can you describe the noise and the possible location?
coming from under the drum, its a constant sound that sounds like its way off balance.
OK, you will need to replace the brake shoes on the washer. The job is not that hard. Here are the brakes to order and I included a video to show you how to make the repair.http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/clic...
sorry I wasnt more clear the new basket drive was complete with brake shoes and all.. Any other ideas as to what would be making it so noisy.
