Android tablets and phones are smart enough to play all apps from Google play. However, so-called smart TV's are rather immune, and only play a very limited number of apps from the site of their own maker (so Samsung TV's play a few Samsung apps, LG TV's play a few LG apps, and so on). Your observation is quite right.

The fault lies with the backlight LEDs. It is common with these sets. If you open the panel and replace the failed LEDs, or replace the panei.

Hi, I have just had same problem and rang Samsung who sorted it ! All that was required was to reset remote by taking out the batteries then press power for approx 10 seconds and then replace the batteries and hey presto it worked!
I have found the solution at last :)
Put the TV in standby and press these buttons in order
Info, Menu, Mute and Power on.
You will then see a hidden menu, on line 12 select reset
Bingo :)

The capacitors on the power supply need to be replaced. When you take apart the TV, and then remove the power supply (it's the section that the power cord goes to) and open it up. Look for the little can capacitors and see if any of them are bulging on top. That is the sign that they've blown. Replace the big ones (about 5) for about $5 in parts. Reassemble and test by turning it on. Search for YouTube video on how to replace capacitors.
