See if there is something wrong with the pad under the ink carton. There is a little sponge thing that absorbs the ink and transfers it to the paper. The ink could also be the issue. If none of these works, you can just return it for a new one if you still have the receipt
Calibrate the printer. Follow these steps to calibrate the product and align the CPR.
1. Open HP Toolbox 2. In the Toolbox window, click the product model name to expand the menu choices. 3. Click to expand the Device Settings menu. 4. Select Print Quality from the Device Settings menu, and then click Calibrate on the Print Quality panel. 5. Click OK when the Your request has been sent to the device message appears on the computer.
The calibration begins and lasts for approximately 2 to 3 minutes.
If
the printout still not acceptable, repeat steps 1 through 5. You can
recalibrate the printer as many as three times. If, after three
calibration attempts, the printout is still the same, service the
product.
I posted the problem on 4/6/09 about my HP Laserjet 2600n with the black line from top to bottom on all pages. The issues ended up being with one of the toner cartridges. I replaced them all - and the line went away! I will need to go back now and find out which one it was, and then I'll toss that one, and I will keep / reuse the others.
If you're still getting smudges, there must still be a label or part of a label either on one of the image drums or the transfer belt, i've found in the past it somethings gets stuck inside the unit on the cleaning blade. What i suggest is you run a print and open the front door at the paper travels along the transfer belt, look at all the image drums and see if you can see the smudge on one of them, if so the problem is caused by that cartridge if not it's in the transfer belt somewhere. You may need to try stopping the printer a few times and if the problem is in one of the cartridges, you will mst likely have to replace it, as with the transfer belt if you think that's causing the problem it's easier to remove it and rotate the belt manually.
Please note the image drums and the transfer belt are all light sensative
Is it possible for you to clean the printheads manually with cotton buds and cleaning solution on this unit. Clean all thoroughly and this might just correct issue.
