Compressor does not turn on

The switch works with pressure from the tank pushing on a rubber diaphragm that in turn activates the contacts. With the switch on and no pressure in the tank, the contacts should be engaged. Most likely failed switch. Easy to replace, however. Find generic pressure switch on ebay and replace as factory replacement will be quite expensive. When ordering, note the thread size and number of ports needed and cut-out pressure (about 125 psi is best) . Should cost around $20.00 on ebay and factory about 49.95. Will work the same. Good luck with your repair.

How much oil do I

Half a glass or below to quarter glass and you should be fine. If you can see the oil level in the sight glass you are OK.... If you can't see it add to half a glass. Never over fill it that is just as hard on it as not enough....

I also have air coming out of my oil fill cap

if you go to sears parts you should be able to see a parts diagram and see if all the parts of the pump are as they should be from what i know there is a piston that moves up and down there are two sides to the pump head the top piece and the muffler with the filter lets air in the other side has the flex hose it isn't to complicated to take apart make sure parts are in the right order on diagram . i think the parts can be dry oil isn't going to hurt any thing though just make sure you don't have to much in the fill tube the bottom of that tube should only cover the little gear in the see-through port half way any more than that and oil and air will come out that tube

The electric motor may have seized up from moisture or contamination. Make sure all air has been released by opening a valve or fitting.Disconnect the compressor from its power source, (Tape the power cord plug to compressor handle for extra safety) Remove motor cover, try to rotate the motor with a screw driver using just a little pressure. If the motor has brushes, make sure they are in contact and do not need replacement. Check to see if the motor has lubrication points. If so us a little WD40 or other oil based product.Place cover back on motor. Plug unit in to power source. If the unit still 'hums' turn switch off. I believe this compressor is oil less.If so the motor and compressor may be connected as a unit.If the compressor itself is froze up you may be able to separate the two and try freeing any frozen parts, again making sure the unit is disconnected. If the compressor does not respond to the suggestions given consider replacement if out of warranty.Good luck!

My compressor will not go

The problem with compressors not building pressure is usually a bad pressure switch or bad regulator. Does the motor shut off at 20psi or does it continue running and not build pressure? If the motor continues to run with no increase in pressure, the you should go over the machine looking for air leaks from your regulator back all the way to the motor. Any air leak while the compressor is running can cause the pressure to "peak" way before the intended shutoff that it is regulated to.

My air compressor won't get past 60psi but keeps

Your problem lies with the valve plate and/or piston & cylinder. If one or more reed valves on the valve plate are cracked, bent or broken; pressure will only build to a certain point. If either the ring on the piston is damaged or the cylinder is badly scored it will not be able to compress air beyond a certain point. Unless the tank pressure reaches 120psi to 130psi the pressure switch will never turn the motor off.

The compressor runs but the

You have either a broken reed valve on the valve plate or a broken piston ring and/or badly scored cylinder. To check: remove the head on the air pump, the valve plate is directly under the head. The reeds have to be in good condition, no breaks, cracks or bending, to work properly. If they are OK, check the cylinder, it should be very smooth. You will have to remove the piston to check the ring around it. They have a tendency to dry out and sometimes a small section will flip over backwards and will no longer seal the piston enough to compress the air. You'll have to contact Sears to see if parts are still available for this compressor.

Pressure of the air compressor does not go above 1

Check for a fitting on the bottom or end of the tank. This fitting is used to drain air when not using the compressor for long periods, and should be left open most of the time. The biggest reason is that compressed air contains moisture...which will eventually rust your tank. Opening the fitting allows the water to drain out.

Since you have 1 bar, it's probably on, but loose.

Otherwise, feel for air leaks. You may try brushing on some water and dish soap...the leak will cause bubbles.

Good luck.

I have a craftsman recon oil 1 hp air compressor 3

Hi, Larry, W/D here.
Locate where the electrical cord goes to the compressor (a gray or black box). That is your pressure switch, and has a lever next to it, usually with a red rubber tip on it. Flipping the lever turns it on. To hook up the hose, locate the female hose connection at the regulator. It is either the type where you slide the collar back and insert the air line, or the type where the collar is already back, and locks into place when the hose is pushed in.
The regulator on this model is adjustable; the gauges are separated by a knob between them. The knob allows you to adjust the output pressure. The inner gauge, closest to the compressor, shows the pressure on the tank, and the one closest to where tha hose takes off is the "working" pressure. Don't adjust the pressure unless there's a need to. Between the gauges is a small cylindrical brass piece with a ring in the top of it. This is the pressure relief device. It will open if the compressor fails to shut off when it is supposed to. You don't need to do anything to that either.
If the compressor runs a bit, it will produce moisture from the heat of compression, and the moisture will collect in the tank. It is a good idea to drain the tank down from time-to-time to keep the moisture from rusting out the tank. there is a small valve on the underside of the tank for this purpose. When you know that you are going to use the compressor a lot, you can crack the valve, just a bit, to keep the moisture drained.
This should get you started.
Best regards, --W/D-- Please feel free to rate this solution, and let me know if I can help further.

Pressure will not build up past 20 PSI

It is possible the reeds in the intake are loose. This requires removing the top of the cylinder, not for amateurs as the bolts need proper torque and the crack easily. Also check the cold start valve, it is a small brass valve with a needle in the center it bleeds air for cold starts, should be on the tank if so equipped. Check the unloader too. Run the unit then shut off the motor at 20 lbs and listen for air leaking. Not hearing air leaking would indicate the first suggestion of reeds or if it is old, worn rings.

MY COMPESSOR GAGE SHOWS 135 PSI AND 135 ON THE OUT

It is possible that the compressor psi as it is running drops below the tire psi creating a standoff. You must maintain air compressor psi over 110 to fill a tire to 110psi. Add air to your tire but stop when the compressor motor starts to run. When the motor stops then continue to add air until the compressor motor starts and again stop airing up the tire. Repeat as needed.
