The compressor turned on pumped up and shut off and wont start up

Inccrease the line pressure to 90 PSI, a air ratchet is a very high volume air tool and the compressor may not be able to keep up with it.

The compressor i have sat

The buzzing your hearing is your motor trying buy unable to start. There are really just two possibilities depending on the size and type of your compressor. For either type you could have a bad starting capacitor. If you have a motor repair shop near by this is an easy and fairly inexpensive fix.
If your starting capacitor is good your compressor is most likely seized up. If your compressor is a small hobby compressor with a diaphram your diaphram has dry rotted and is preventing the motor from turning. If your compressor is large enough to have a piston their is most likely rust in the cylinder that is seizing your piston in place. Generally for compressors less than 50 gallon it's more cost effective to replace the compressor rather than trying to repair this problem.

We are experiencing an air leak from the oil cap,

The oil cap is a breather for the crankcase. It will blow air. It should have an "o" ring on the oil plug, but it may have rotted off. You can get a new one at Lowe's in the plumbing department.

Another thought: Check the head gasket. Mine just did the same thing. Mine was blown between the two chambers on top. It's very thin right there. I went to the auto parts store and bought some gasket and made my own for about $6. It's up a working great...finally. BTW the gasket kit is on back order right now at Sear's parts website. It appears we aren't the only ones with the problem!

Good luck!

Setting the max pressure on a Craftsman compressor

The pressure setting for on off of the compressor , and the operating pressure don't have to be the same. You should have two gauges. One for tank pressure, and one for operating pressure. Turn the large knob on the operating pressure, ccw to decrease and cw (clockwise) to increase. You can download a manual for your compressor at:

My friend did not know

Hello. You may get lucky and get this running again with your plan. Fill the compressor pump with compressor oil such as API CG/CD heavy duty oil, until the oil reaches the center of the red circle in the sight glass.

AND, here is a free link to the owner manual http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/lis_pdf/OWNM/L0512094.pdf

I have a Sears evolv 3 gal air compressor that

The evolv air compressor was primarily designed to power a very small nailer. The pressure regulator (knob in front) should be turned clockwise till it stops to attain full pressure. At this setting it should air your tire. If not you may have a defective regulator. There is a trick to get full pressure from your tank. Notice the small pressure safety valve on the side of the unit. You could remove this valve and install a fitting giving you two ports. One for the safety and other for a quick disconnect. This second port will give you access to tank pressure without going thru the pressure regulator. This mod is safe because you still have access to regulated pressure when you need it. Good luck

After pumping up it bleeds air

I think the non return valve from the air reservoir may be damaged or stuck and thus unloading the air through the unloader valve.

My friends Craftsman air compressor stopped running

The compressor in question is basically a throw away.
My personal opinion is it's more trouble then it's worth.
Even after it's fixed you still have a throw away compressor.
However it is possible to repair it if the parts are still available.
Check out the link below for parts and diagrams for the compressor in question.

Hope this helps and good luck.

ARE YOU USING AN EXTENSION CORD??

THESE UNITS DRAW SO MUCH POWER THAT THEY WON'T WORK ON AN EXTENSION CORD.

SOME CONTRACTOR MODELS ARE DISIGNED TO WORK WITH AN EXTENSION CORD.

Pressure in the tank only builds to 30 psi

Bad check valve. But I would check the regulator, by turning it down to about 10 PSI and running it and see if it builds again, if that works then it is the check valve. But from what you are saying I would replace the check valve anyways.

I have a craftsman 1.5 hp/

Hi there. Plug your compressor in as close to your circuit box as you can on a circuit that is dedicated to that outlet

What is happening is this. You have a 15 amp circuit and a 15 amp draw on your compressor. No wiggle room at all. If you need to get the air a long ways use air hose and never an extension cord. Joe

I have a 33 gallon craftsman compressor model

i think you will find there is nothing wrong with the compressor part of this its all down to a faulty motor
if it cant start up the motor the motor will hum at first then the circuit braker pops out? yes???
check your getting full mains power first as if its trying to run on a very long extenshion lead its not getting the full power to start up, and you will need a much heaver lead,,,if its in a plug on the wall, change the capasitor on the motor,,,this is the part that hold a lot of volts to kick start the motor over when it first trys to start,,if this capasitor has droped in holding its charge there wont be enough volts in it to kick start the motor over,,so the motor starts to hum first trying to start but it dont stand a chance of spinning up
so it keeps pulling more and more amps till the braker pops out,,,watch this capasitor it can realy bite you if you tuch the two ends that are live????
the motor has two windings in it,,a start up winding and a running winding,, if its been humming for some time now it could have damaged the start up winding

Wont run

Most likely it's a burned out starting capacitor. Running any tool that uses as much power as an air compressor does will usually burn out the capacitors. They burn out because there is too much voltage drop due to the resistance of the cord. The best bet is to buy longer hoses or if you must use an extention cord use a 10 ga. cord.

Compressor runs for a bit and builds about 30 psi

Remove the belt and try and turn the pump by hand if it turns free then you have a bad motor and it will need to be replaced
