Craftsman 3 gal. Air Compressor, 1.5 hp, Horizontal k - Page 2 Questions & Answers
Air compressor cannot spin up with pressure in tank sometimes
There is an unloader valve and a check valve on the discharge side of the pump. The check valve is not holding and the unloader is not dumping the pressure so the compressor cannot start. Since it is new, you may want to take it back. If not you are going to be replacing parts.
No pressure , but motor runs
At a guess compressor may have done a valve or piston rings but without looking at it can't do more than speculate, motor could be in need of a full rebuild probably start with checking the drain valve on the bottom of the tank and if its got a safety release check that but more likely the compressor it self

Prior to starting the unit. Look at the pressure gauge. 1. Make sure the regulator is set to the desired PSI. 2. Make sure the unit is connected to an AC circuit that is required to support this machine. If you have high end AC outlets that are intended for a low power i.e. 10 AMP and you connect this unit to the circuit it may disconnect. So try an outlet on the outside of the house intended for higher amperage machines like those used outdoors. The problem may be with the power source. Check that first. Now for the unit itself. 1. Connect the unit and set the pressure regulator to max pressure. 2. Turn the unit to Auto/On the unit should only run until the pressure is reached. 3. Connect a pneumatic tool to the unit and drain off pressure. Once the pressure gauge drops below the set value the unit should start again. If not then you need to take the unit to a certified service center to have the regulator checked. Btw, I’m available to help over the phone in case u need at

Compressor runs fills tank but then it wont keep the pressure, won't restart to keep pressure above requested pressure. I have to let it seat for 1/2 hour to restart again
Most likely problem is the tank fill check valve. The most common way a a tank will loose pressure is by leak-back at the check valve. This also makes it hard to start because it leaves the tank pressure on the pump head instead of letting it bleed off. The motor will only restart after the tank pressure is bleed off to a low level, reducing the back pressure the motor will have to overcome. Leaking can be heard at the pressure switch, where the air is normally bleeds off over 10 seconds or so after the motor turns off. A defective check valve will continuously leak down at the pressure switch unloader valve instead of bleeding out in just 10 seconds. The check valve is an assembly that is largely hidden inside the tank. It just looks like a large hex nut where the filler tube from the pump enters the tank. Removal usually means first removing a smaller hex/barb/connector where the smaller relief line ties into the big nut. Inspection of the check valve will easily reveal whether this is the problem.
Air compressor model no. 921.153101 blowing air trough air cleaner
If you get air movement
out of the air cleaner and it only compresses air to 25psi, you have bent or broken reed valves in the head. Take the head off the cylinder and inspect the valve plates and reed valves. This is a Craftsman compressor so you'll most likely have to get parts through Sears at
www.searspartsdirect.com. For best results replace everything between the head and cylinder; gaskets, valve plates and reed valves.
I have the exact same compressor and have used it for several years having no problems. Until today. It started smoking and when i look through the grill of the motor, i see sparks and the engine soun
It sounds like the motor is being overworked. This could be caused by several things:- No or low oil in the pump crankcase. Take the belt off the pump and try turning it by hand. Except for needing a little more effort to get over the compression stroke, it should turn smothly and fairly easily.- Try turning the motor by hand. It should turn very easily with no side to side or end to end play in the armature shaft. If not the bearing(s) may be damaged.- If the compressor starts up OK with no compressed air in the tank, shuts down at the proper pressure, then has a hard time restarting when the pressure drops to the point where the motor tries to restart and fill the tank, you have a broken tank check valve.- The capacitor(s) on the motor may be bad which will make it work hard to get started and get very hot. This usually ends with a blown circuit breaker on the motor or line circuit.
