Noise is present when ignition off. Had to remove battery cable to stop. Sounds like some kind of compressor, like the kind that plugs into cigarette lighter that inflates tires. Doesn't sound like fan for AC. Engine starts and AC works fine, but no good to drive if this runs battery down when ignition is off. Coming from engine compartment passenger side low and close to firewall or front wheel. Can anyone help?

There are extra cooling pumps that some foreign cars have that run for a designated time after the engine is shut off. I had a Mini cooper made by BMW that had it. If you hear it running for a while, but then it shuts off, thats normal. If it stays on for ever and never shuts off, I honestly don't know what to tell you

I think your dad is on the right track. AC's do make more noise when on if the compressor needs service or bearing getting loose.

I think it is the cabin/ pollen filter.
The noise is louder on normal AC operation cos thats when the air is being pulled in through the filter and the sound decreases with recirculate because the filter only functions for outside air.
Need to use a credit card or similar to seperate and move the upper dash centre piece towards windscreen, it clips off. Then open the 3 x torx screws and lift the dash on the passenger side. then remove the plastic cover (oddly shaped) it has about 7 screws, then twist and remove, it requires some real effort, then pollen filter is visible. replace filter and voila! it would make your AC perform like a new car again!!
Hope it helps,

The first thing to check on a rattling noise is if going over minor bumps in the road if that is when it makes noise is a sway bar link, they make a rattling noise. If you raise that wheel up you might also want to try and wobble the wheel to be sure it is not a tie rod end or ball joint. Typically I run into the sway bar links or the sway bar bushings making the noise. However ive even seen it be a rock sitting on the strut plate.

Hi Gerald Blakeman, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
Have you looked at the fan right behind the radiator? Most front wheel drive cars have an electric fan there; it may run if the engine is hot when it is turned off. The fan should shut off when the engine is cooled.
