My 1986 gmc safari runs bad in O/D. pops thru the in take pulling a hill. exhaust smells bad when it happens. I am thinking coolant temp sensor.

Think Mass airflow meter. It needs cleaning. Just don't use any spray cleaner. Severe damage will result. Look for a spray cleaner that is made specifically for the job. Check the cam position sensor too.

Pressing the rear latch release

If the actuator is working (You hear a "click" when you turn the key or push the button), one of the rods may have come disconnected from either the actuator or the latch. You will have to remove the upper door interior panel to gain access to these parts. If you are VERY careful, you may be able to remove it without damaging it, but you may end up having to get a replacement panel (Try your local salvage yard). The rods come from the factory with a plastic clip holding them into the socket. These deteriorate over time and allow the rod to pop out when the hatch is closed (Especially if it is slammed). Once you have the door open, you can reconnect the rod using a clip like the one pictured below, or by using a piece of "safety" wire attached through existing hole in the door panel to keep the rod in place. Hope this helps! b3f39da0-a02e-4f3e-9efd-06359f23de51.jpg

Car starts cuts off

This could be caused by a multitude of things. Is the check engine light on? Check the evaporative system for a vacuum leaks, the unit is on the drivers side under the van, to the left of gas tank. These vans also have a lot of problems with the distributor cap. When was the last time it was changed? Is there black smoke when starting the unit? If so it may be your pressure regulator or fuel lines going to the injector, or an injector itself is leaking.

Go to a Pep Boys and get a Hanes manual for that year vehicle. This manual will tell you everything you need to know about EVERTHING to do with whatever you need to know about your vehicle.Hanes pulls vehicles apart, every nut, bolt and clip, taking pix and explaining what they do.Then how to put back together and set. This would be easier than ME explain the procedure here.Have fun.

I have a 98 safari van that has been put on a scanner which the codes read: P0420(catalyst system efficiency below threshold-bank1), P0452(evaporative emission control system pressure sensor low imput

You may need a mechanic. At least a shop manual. The catalytic converter code means the computer does not think the cat is working right based on input from the O2 sensors. That data would need to be checked out and verified along with a temp scan of the cat itself. The other two codes are saying the signal from the pressure sensor is too high and too low. The computer measures pressure inside the gas tank to make sure it vents correctly. The pressure sensor could be faulty, or it could be something else in the venting system.
