The reg is the only adjustment you would need to check the pressure at the grill to see what you have . Also because its new there is always the change that some thing might be blocked .

Sounds like the reg on the grill is not working letting too much gas in .

Lack of air maybe / Check the reg is giving the right pressure .

clean burn gas is a blue flame it is achieved by using the correct jet size for the gas in use and by adjusting the air shroud around the jet opening if you converted from natural gas to LPG and didn't change the jet size that is one reason next there is a tin type shroud around the jet area that can be moved back or forward over the big hole that lets air to mix with the gas at the jet the position of that shroud adjusts the air to gas ratio If you are not sure of what I am talking about , talk with a gas fitter or have them do the job

2 things cause soot, too much gas or not enough combustion air. Check gas pressure and check your air inlet for restriction.

If you see soot a few things can be wrong. If it's a F/p then the logs may be impinging on the flame and not aligned properly or you may not have enough air. The air adjustment is on the burner and you should open it a fraction more.

Make sure Gas valve is in ON position many forget to turn it from pilot to ON

If you hear click it means all is working OK. Check gas valve. Male sure it's in ON position

From what I have read on these things, never had one, but they have 2 fans, maybe one, plus an auger and thermostat. The one fan would **** fresh air in from the room to fuel the fire, while the other fan would blow the heat back out from a sealed area. The auger spins constantly, slow, dropping pellets on the fire determined by the thermostat. If this is right and relates to your stove, I can see where the smell of smoke would come from. The second fan is pulling in smoke from the fire. Check the gaskets in that area. I was wondering if it wasn't just the new stove smell you were getting?

The knob shafts have grease on them. That gets thick or will freeze when it's really cold.
