After trying to reset the waste ink on Canon MX 870 it went dead and wont come on
That happens sometime especially if you followed generic instructions to reset the ink counter. In cannon it tends to still give warnings and acts up until a new serial number has been registered from the cartridge. Following the same steps should make your printer respond- those codes were intended for manufactures for the most- The printer companies don't want you restating the ink counter or waste counter as for when theres a need for that it usually means a user is attempting to defeat the system that keeps track of replacing the ink and ink levels. Just play with it a lil to get it out of that mode- it may be compatible with the method you used and also you will still have a low or no ink warning even after this is done.

What are some other troubleshooting tasks to perform for a Canon MX420 that is printing blank pages?
First step in this kind of issue is check the data cable is properly socketed.
Second step is perform a copy operation directly from the printer. If this fails your issue is printer or cartridge, so swap out the cartridge and retry. If still no copy - your printer has an electronics fault.
Step three is try a document ( D2) from a different application (App2). If it prints the new document (D2) - your issue is with the original document (D1) or the application (App1) printing from. Try printing a different document (D3) from the original application (App1). If document D3 prints from App1 - the fault is in the document D1, and if document D3 fails to print - the fault is in App1.
