I have the Whirlpool Gold Series. On the low or gentle selection it still spins my clothes so hard they are wrapped around each other and stuck to the sides of the tub. My knit shirts come out so wrinkled that no matter what I do, line dry them or use the dryer, they never smooth out. It seems like the spin cycle for knits is just about the same as it is for heavy clothes and towels.

This issue could be caused by a number of things. It is possible that the clothes are not properly balanced in the wash drum, causing them to wrap around the agitator. It could also be a problem with the agitator itself, or with the transmission.
You should check the filter but you must check thoroughly as generally its something that is wrapped around the filter stopping it.generally its elastic or laces or string from hoods
The problem is probably hard water build up or dried soap or some other foreign matter stuck between the cap and the valve/cartridge. It is simply a bad design (if you ask me) and moen does not
make a special tool to remove it which is a surprise since they make a
special tool for everything else :(. since you probably don't have a rubber/plastic pair of channel locks, i would get a regular pair of channel locks and something like that rubber thing you use to open jars or a thick dish cloth to wrap around the cap and then use the channel locks to gently coax it off. you could also tap it gently w/a mallet or small hammer and/or spray it w/a little WD-40
Many high-end washers have two spin cycle speeds. The low speed is for delicate fabrics. Yours may be stuck in the low speed. Check that you are selecting the wash cycle with the high speed spin.
If you are and it continues to spin at the low speed then your controller is most likely at fault. Your gearbox could be bad too but it usually complains with a lot of noise.

Somewhat inherent in this design. You can try to carefully unwrap the clothes by gently rocking them back and forth to see if you can release them, or gently spin the drum while you tug (not too hard!) on the stuck clothes.
The wash plate seal might be compromised, but if you start taking the inner workings apart you have to replace the gasket set.
I have not tackled this on my unit yet though I have replaced the old pump motor with the improved one (single piece instead of 2 pieces), and I have gotten adept at taking the unit apart from the bottom to remove draw strings which get sucked into the pump impeller, jamming or clogging it.
The wash plate seal might be getting old - I think mine probably needs to be replaced but doing that will require more extensive repairs than just putting in a new seal. The service manual warns several times about replacing the proper seals, gaskets o-rings and/or grommets if you remove the outer or inner wash plates, to avoid compromising the water tight seals and causing damage to the U-joint assembly that gives the washer its characteristic wash motion.
