Sony 8mm Stantard Grade 120 Minute Camcorder Tape P-6120MPL USA 8mm Tape Logo
Posted on Sep 29, 2010

I have a GE CG818A Camcorder, when I play it it only plays black and white. Was wondering if there is a used Sony or any camcorder that would play my Video8 P6-120MP tape, in color.

I have the exact same camera and same exact same problem. Any analog Video8 or Hi-8 camcorder or VCR will play these tapes.

By using the same cassettes as Hi8, many (NOT ALL) Digital8 (produced by Sony exclusively) camcorders are able to play analog Video8/Hi8 recordings, preserving compatibility with already recorded analog tapes.

you can connect Digital8 camcorders to your computer to download your movies for editing or Internet use.

As of 2008, Digital8 camcorders have been removed from the equipment offered by Sony.

The Sony DCR-TRV480 allows you to play all of your old 8mm and Hi8 video tapes. For all your video recording needs, the DCR-TRV480 captures digital video on Digital8 media for sharp, high quality recordings.

The following models of Digital 8® camcorders cannot play tapes recorded in the analog 8mm or Hi8™ formats.
    DCR-TRV130
    DCR-TRV140
    DCR-TRV250
    DCR-TRV260
    DCR-TRV265
    DCR-TRV280

When playing my camcorder thru my TV , the picture on the tv is black and white however it is color on my viewer on the camcorder...how can I get the TV to be color also?

Are you using RCA video cable or S-video cable?
if you using s-video cable, try rca video cable.
if still does it, it could be the main circuit board problem.

Sony analog hi8 plays only in black and white now.

Take it for a service - 'No user serviceable parts within' applies here.

Playback is black and white

if this is b/w on the tv then you have a settings problem.

you need to check you connected the camcorder to the tb correctly, it should be yellow for video and red and white for audio, and you could try looking at the tv menus

if its the camcorder then check the cc monitor. and all the settings. Get anew dv tape and record something , check its colour then play it through the tv.

Mode for playback of older 8mm tapes using Sony DCR-TRV730 ?

In 1990s Sony camcorder records movie in analog format so playing in digital camcorder like DCR-TRV730 doesn't mean it will be converted in digital format and you can not import file in PC for editing purpose. You will get analog signal while playing back old cassettes.

Regarding SP, LP speed, its decided at time of recording. Camera sens SP or LP automatically in playback and set itself accordingly.

If you want to convert old cassettes into digital format, connect our camcorder to DVD recorder and burn DVD which is digital format, copy DVD files in to PC and do desired editing.

LCD won't project

You may have a problem with the image sensor device (CCD). From October 3, 2005 through October 2, 2007, Sony will repair, free of charge, affected products exhibiting the above-mentioned problem where it is caused by the image sensor device. Sony will also cover the cost of shipping and handling from and to addresses within the United States and US Territories for service to correct this issue. To see if you have this problem: Power On your camcorder (make sure the battery is fully charged). Check the LCD screen and verify that the display icons are turned on. If you cannot see the icons, press the Display button until the icons are visible. Put a tape in the camcorder. With the lens cap off, record some video. NOTE: Be sure to speak during the recording so the video will contain your voice. Rewind this section of the tape (using tape counter to verify start of your recording). Play back the recorded video and use the LCD screen on the camcorder to view it. You should hear the audio you recorded and the Display icons/text will still appear. If your camcorder is affected by this CCD issue, the picture will either be extremely distorted, or there will be no visible picture (just a blank LCD screen with the display icons still visible).
