Canon Powershot A540, batteries need replaced constantly. I am using 2 AA alkaline as instructed. As soon as I put them in it says batteries are low and shuts off. This is happening with all brands of new batteries. What's the problem? Occasionally I may get to take 1 or 2 pictures before this happens, usually none.

I have a Canon PowerShot A75 camera that had the same problem with the "Replace Battery" message appearing immediately even after I had put in brand new out of the package recommended batteries. After trying all the remedies I had read about, I bought and put the Eneloop hybrid NiMH Rechargeable batteries in my camera. There have been no problems since then even though I have taken many, many photos since putting in that type of battery. The AA alkaline batteries just don't seem to work even though they are recommended in the instructions that came with the camera. I see the date of your question is quite some time ago. I hope you have found a solution by now to your battery problem. If not, give this a try.

It seems there is some where inside the camera leakage.. Are you using Li-ion rechargeable batteries or AA batteries For previously cameras, always comes with AA batteries, and most of the battery are with low capacity.

When i put the new batery it will display "change the batery" and automatically power off the camera

This camera takes AA batteries. You must use good alkaline batteries or better, a set of high capacity NiMH recharegables. Zinc batteries just aren't up to the task.

New rechargeable batteries are supplied only partially charged. You need to charge them fully before use.

Hi,
For the best results, I recommend you to use Canon rechargeable (NiMH) batteries. Rechargeable batteries provide the best performance and are the most economical choice.
Else......
AA alkaline batteries such as those from Energizer or Duracell will provide the best performance for non-rechargeable batteries.

Canon actually has recalled some serial numbers for your model camera for the problem that you're experiencing. Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

Shows low battery after putting in new batteries

Your best solution is to use Sanyo Eneloop batteries because of their higher voltage over the discharge curve compared to regular NiMH batteries. See http://www.epinions.com/content_309637189252.
I have gotten a full week of use with hundred of pictures on one charge using a Canon A540 and a set of Eneloops. The only problem is they are hard to find, but you can get them on Amazon.com.
