I was not getting any cold water to my washing machine. i checked the hose, screen (both clear- theyre new hoses) when pulling the knob with the cold water setting water would start to fill the basin and then stop. i could then hear humming from the valve/sylenoid. I replaced both the inlet water valve/sylenoid and i still have the same problem. what else could it be and how much am i looking at spending?

Try checking for debris clogging the inlet of the washer. Shut off the supply water, then start the machine to do a warm wash (to relieve any water pressure in the hoses) for a few seconds - then shut off. Unplug from power and move the machine so that you can have good access to it and then mark and disconnect the hoses. Some machines have screen filters on the hose inlets. Check and clear out any obstructions you may find. It's not unusual to find sand, metal / rust chips, etc as can result from being pumped up from a well or an opened fire hydrant on the street due to a fire or the town simply flushing lines.

Before reconnecting the hoses - place and hold the ends into the tub (if possible) and turn the water on slowly to make sure that water comes out of both. This ensures that there is water flow all the way up to the machine inlets. You'll have to clear or replace any parts (hoses, screen, etc.) as needed to get water flowing.

If still not working - the issue can be a simple hot / cold water solenoid valve replacement ($) to something more involved ($$$). Check out the video to get an idea as to how to check out the valve (it's very similar to all machines).

pull the hot water hose off at the faucet and machine and check for blockage in the hot water hose,clean or replace the hose sediment screens,then hook back up to water faucet and flush hose with hot water,then check water valve on machine for a screen and clean it as well before reconnecting hot water hose

Several factors can cause a GE washing machine not to allow water to enter the drum, including closed valves, kinked hoses, a faulty electrical breaker or sediment in the water lines. Sediment occurs most often when the water to the home is off due to electrical outages or when installing items in the plumbing. Cleaning the screens will remove a sediment blockage, allowing water into a washing machine.

1. • 1 Check each water valve for the hot and cold water lines to make sure they are open completely. Open valves are turned completely to the left. Check the fuse at the electrical box to make sure it is not faulty, and check to make sure the washer is plugged securely into the outlet. Observe the water supply hoses to make sure there are no kinks from the supply valves to the back of the appliance.
     Observe the water supply valve handles to see if they are cracked. If so, they need replacing.
     
   • 2 Turn off both the hot and cold water supply valves. Turn each knob completely counterclockwise to turn them to the off position. Pull the washer forward to reach the water supply valves, hoses and the back of the washing machine. Place one hand on each side of the washing machine and slightly lift the front while pulling straight out from the wall.
     
   • 3 Place a bucket at the rear of the appliance. Use adjustable pliers to unscrew the hot and cold water hoses on the back of the washing machine. Turn each hose counterclockwise to unscrew and remove from the washing machine while pointing them into the bucket to catch any water in the hoses.
     
   • 4 Turn on the hot water supply valve and hold the hose pointing into the bucket. Observe to see if water is coming out of the hose or trickling out of the hose. Repeat this procedure for the cold water supply hose. Limited water or no water flow indicates that the lack of flow is at the valve end of the water supply hoses.
     
   • 5 Pull the filters out of the washer valves with needle-nose pliers. Rinse under warm water to clean out any sediment and replace them in the hot and cold water washer valves on the appliance.
     
   • 6 Unscrew the hot water supply hose from the valve using adjustable pliers. Turn the hose connector clockwise to unscrew and remove. Repeat this procedure with the cold water supply hose. Pull out the screen from each hose with needle-nose pliers and rinse under warm water to clean. Replace the screens.
     
   • 7 Replace both water supply hoses on the washer valves and the washing machine and tighten them with adjustable pliers. Slide the washing machine back into place and level the legs by slightly lifting the front of the washing machine and setting it back down.
     

is the cold water all the way on?

if so, the first thing to do would be to check the screens in the cold water fill hose and the screen in the cold side of the water valve on the back of the machine. if that is not the problem then replace the water valve.

(turn the water off before taking the hose loose)

Remove the hose and look inside the water inlet valve for a screen pull this out and clean if dirty. Also check the screens in the hose. If all is clear the water inlet valve ( cold water solenoid) has failed. This needs to be replaced as a unit. There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html that will walk you thru testing the water inlet valve. It's a different model but testing will be the same.

Turn off water, take one hose off and stick in tub, turn on the water to this hose and verify your water pressure is there(no frozen lines) Look and see if screen looks clear inside valve before reattaching, turn water back on,,,,,,,,, If you hear a buzz when pulling out timer knob in agitation area it means you have power to valve, water valve is bad. (one solenoid for hot, one for cold)
If this is a standard top load unit(direct drive style) It has the pressure switch and timer controlling power to the valve

If its overfilling over the the top you should check the pressure hose connection to the tub. Most of the time it has fallen off. It's a clear hose that attaches to your tub. If that's intact replace your pressure switch.

the water inlet valve at the back where the 2 hoses hook up is also called a mixing valve so you can set the machine to get say a warm wash and cold rinse. if one side of this valve is not working anymore you may only get either hot or cold but not both coming into the machine. this is something you can check by switching the 2 hoses around. hope this helps.

First, take cold water supply hose off and make sure there are no blocked screened washers in either end. Now for the most likely cause, check the screen in the inside of the cold water inlet, right where the hose screws onto the machine. The screen can generally be taken out and cleaned. If it is clear, that just about only leaves a bad water inlet valve. (yes, the part the hoses screw onto)

my guess would be a bad inlet valve. before replacing the inlet valve, check the screen inside the valve,remove the hose and see if its clogged. then check the screen inside the hose at the water valve side. if both of those are clear go ahead and replace the valve
