Changing Vista to XP Pro on a Compaq Presario SR2180NX Desktop PC

I have a Compaq Presario SR2180NX Desktop PC with pre-installed vista on it. I have an HP Desktop that has Windows XP Pro. Can I use the recovery disk from my HP to change the Vista to Windows XP Pro on the Compaq Desktop? Both computers are in my name just in different places. I purchased the Windows XP Pro.

SR2180NX has the Vista 32Bit OS from HP. The restore partition will always put Vista 32Bit back on if you use it. Windows XP can only be put on from scratch and I have done it while I still have Vista installed. One problem: there are no XP drivers under SR2180NX webpages. Do your research on the parts that are installed in the 2180 and any other HP machines that have the Windows XP operating system as the OEM OS. But First, check the Intel Site for the 945 chipset drivers (include the SouthBridge, too) under XP. Get them downloaded to a CD and burn the rest of the drivers you find for XP on the same CD. This way, you will have them ready when you are performing the down-grade to windows xp. After you are done with the XP install, you will still have access to the files & work you had done while in Vista. The Vista files are still readable. You might want to consider getting the Windows 7 Professional (not basic) available October 22, 2009. AND you will still have to get the Intel Downloads for Win7 any way, so why not make it a project and make it last for a few years. XP Support stops in 2014.

No the recovery disc will not work it is specific to that machine. Unless it is the exact same model or the same exact components the recovery disc would just cause problems.

Changing OS from windows vista to xp

You can install xp on a vista laptop, you will need an xp install cd and you will need to backup your data (it will be erased in the downgrade process). As for the drivers, go to your laptops manufactures site. They will have a support section for your laptop model where you can see if there are drivers for xp. If you have the hardware that will support windows 7, I would go with that. Xp is slow and no longer supported by Microsoft as of April 2014, which poses a security risk. Windows 7 will be supported for a while and is faster and more stable than xp or vista.

They may be hit or miss using the Vista drivers for XP. I'll check around the web to see if they have any XP drivers for you, and post them back up.
