Sorry cant help you, we dont have Pawpaw trees in uk, but i will suggest you may need to harvest the fruit before the tree dies, or it just may need to be cut down under the rotting bark + give it a feed. Good luck .

I would cut it down and burn it, after a freeze trees go to bearing a sour fruit that only a pig would eat. it sounds like your tree might need to be replaced. sorry

It sounds like the chain does want sharpening, it depends on what you are cutting ( type of timber, dirty timber,burnt timber etc ) as to how long before it needs sharpening, if the chain comes into contact with the ground below the tree it will lose its edge instantly.
