There is a sprague clutch in the transmission that holds the shaft from turning in one direction during agitation. It is usually made of nylon and is not serviceable when it breaks. Time to replace the transmission. Had to replace ours four years ago after seven years of service. Wife loves the washer and it took me an afternoon to make the swap. Tranny cost $229 in 2014. Easy enough to do if your handy.
Testimonial: "Thank You WestTexas. I do appreciate the advice. That is what it seems But I didn't see a sprague clutch in the Helical Trans. diagram. It like there is nothing holding on the return on the bottom on the push stroke in agitate. I thought it must push against the brake at the bottom of unit. The washer is a match to Dryer. I want to fix as I'm on Soc.Sec. But can't find a Trans. for this model. Where did you find yours ? They went to a Orbital on latter models. Don't know if they can be swapped. THANK YOU ANYWAY !"
Remove the belt from the pulley under the machine.
check shaft and thrust bearing for damage. If good, go back to top of machine and take out the agitator.
check shaft splines for condition in agitator and shaft, if all ok, rotate shaft with slip pliers or the like and if you rotate it and get grinding noise your transmission is bad and needs to be replaced.
my thoughts are the 1980 machine has had a good life and it's time for a new machine.
Good Luck,
Gary

Be sure to check inside basket very carefully to make sure no loose nails or screws or drill bits etc that were left in a pocket are sticking through a hole in the basket and locking it to tub. This is common. If that is not the problem, one of three things has happened. 1 The thrust bearing that releases the brake has worn out. This is the most common and easiest thing to repair. If you tilt the machine back so you can look under it you will see the pulley that turns the transmission. When the pulley turns one direction it works the agitator, turn it the other direction and you should see it push the brake up that is directly above it. The thrust bearing kit includes the pulley and all bearings and washers to release brake. If you are mechanichal and can follow the directions that come with it, it is a fairly simple repair. 2 The brake lining has come apart and "stacked" itself in the brake housing. Replacing the brake is not hard, but there is about 200lbs of spring force pushing against the brake and housing that must be released slowly. I would recommend you call a technician for this just because I don't want anyone to get hurt trying to follow my directions on this repair. 3 An item of clothing has found its way between the basket and tub and has the basket bound up. This would mean removing agitator and basket. It is not likely this has happened, but I have seen it before.

I had the same problem and ended up replacing the control board which solved it. Contact Westland Sales at 800-356-0766 ext. 5 for tech support.
SOURCE: Does not spin
Seems you need a lube job on the centrifical mechanical switch that fully engauges the spin cycle( part of the pully to shaft assembly)
SOURCE: Washer will not spin. Does fill and agitate.
Any error code associated with fail to Spin?
Is this a FAV6800A LED console model or a FAV9800A LCD console model?
Like one of these?
