I have a Brother SQ9050. I can't get the machine to let me adjust the top tension. No mater what I set the tension, if it's 4, 7, or any one of them. The tension is still loose. Is there quick fix way to fix the machine at home?

Thread leaves a lint behind as it goes through the tension mechanism. Take it apart and clean it. Hope this helps

Thank you, thank you! I just tightened the screw on my bobbin case and that instantly fixed my thread tension problem. How on earth are you supposed to know about the little screw?! I thank you so much for the tip!

Sounds like the bobbin thread is not inside the tension on the bobbin case. This normally happens when the bobbin is upside down. Insert the bobbin and pull on the thread.The bobbin should turn counter clockwise.

Loose bottom stitches come from the top, not the bottom. Seems weird, but that's the way sewing machines work.

The dial tension should be set at the mid range and make absolutely sure that you have the machine threaded correctly. Both things will cause a sloppy bottom stitch.

Hi, general rule of thumb:: loops on the top, problem on the bottom.. Loops on the bottom, problem is on the top.. When threading your machine, stop just before you thread your needle, put the presser foot down. Try pulling the thread. If it pulls easily, the thread is not thru the tension wheel right. If it pulls hard, you got it right.

Top tension back to 4 and leave the bobbin tension as is.

Make sure you have a new needle for the type of fabric being sewn installed with the flat side to the back of the machine. A bent needle can sometimes go unnoticed.

Always thread the machine with the presser foot up and this will give proper tension to the stitch.

Check the manual to be sure you are threading correctly (always with the presser foot up) and that the bobbin thread is feeding in the correct direction from the bobbin spool and through the guides.

Take hold of the thread at the needle as you lower and raise the needle to pull up the bobbin thread. Take both thread ends under the presser foot and to the back of the machine.

Brother Sewing Machine CS-6000iNeed instruction:using double needle.Tension issues:Thread underneath is very loopy no matter what tension setting,top threads have missed stitches.
Try removing the top threads completely from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot== this allows the threads to seat fully in the tension disk. Thread one thread completely, then thread the other thread making sure to run it through the other tension disk (if your machine has divided tension disks).
Set the tension to the midway point.
Insert fabric, lower the presser foot, and retest. Adjust the top tension as needed,. If tunneling occurs between the two top threads and adjusting the top tension doesn't fix it, you may need to adjust the bobbin tension. However, before changing bobbin tension, I would try including tear-away or tissue paper with the fabric to add body to prevent the tunneling.

Try re-threading the bobbin you may have it in there backwards. If that doesn't work re-thread your needle thread and play with your tension.

try changing the needle
try rethreading the machine top and bobbin
make sure to use every thread guide this is important for the tension
try using a different bobbin
clean under the needle plate and in the bobbin area for lint

On my bobbin side of the materal after i sew its just tons of thread on that side and the stitch is not tight
Loose on bottom indicates trouble with top tension. Re thread your machine with the presser foot UP. sew a test seam. If you still have problems adjust the top tension. sew a test seam. If you still have problems clean between the tension discs with some sturdy fabric and unwaxed dental floss. Sew another test seam.

Still problems? Wind the top tension tight then back off 1/4 turns until the seam is balanced.

I have a VX1250. I don't know how to regulate the tension.
There is two places to adjust thread tension: the top tension device controls the top thread tension and is usually a dial or knob with numbers on the front of the machine.

Then there is some form of tension device on the bobbin; in your case I believe the Brother has a removable bobbin case with a tension spring which holds the bobbin thread firmly: the tension spring can be adjusted with a screwdriver but once set, you shouldn't need to adjust this much, just alter the top tension slightly for different weights of fabric. So start by setting top tension dial to 4-5 and test stitch a seam. Use different coloured but the same type of thread top and bottom and take a look at the seam. You want to see a balanced even seam.

If the bobbin thread is too loose, then you probably will need to finess the tension spring on the bobbin case and adjust this slightly. The best way to set the tension on the bobbin case is as follows. Load the bobbin into the bobbin case and pull the thread tail into the tension spring, then suspend the bobbin by holding the thread tail up in the air (the dangle test). You want it to be just tight enough to hold its own weight, but still able to release thread when you pull gently downwards on the bobbin case. If it isn't doing this then take your little screw driver and adjust the screw on the leaf tension spring by ONE QUARTER TURN ONLY. Lefty looser, Righter Tighter. Then test again, and adjust again until its right.

Now test stitch again and finess your top tension to get the seam even. Remember to change the needle for each new sewing project too; this will impact tension also.

How to adjust tension on bottom stitch?
There are tow places where the thread tension is adjusted.

One is bobbin. This is not routinely adjusted. Just once and it is good for long time. This is done by turning the only screw on bobbin by about 1/4 turn or so at a time. Try several settings until you find he best.

the other place is the conventionally on body of the machine.

Tension of bottom stitch or top stitch are very confusing words. meaning difft things to difft pple.
All i can say is this. If u see bottom stitch run straight through loops of top thread. then either top tension is too loose or bottom too tight. and vise versa.

With top tension set to middle position adjust the bobbin to get correct stitch. Then later on all u need is to adjust only the top setting according to stitch and cloth

When the bottom stitches are loopy it is the top tension which is wrong. I suspect that it is not threaded correctly for it to be this bad. If you have a tension dial make sure that the thread is properly between the disk. Try the top tension on 4-that is an "average" normal setting. Gradually turn it up as needed. A good way to test tension is to use 2 contrasting colours-red and white are good. You will see at a glance where the problem lies and how well you are correcting it with adjustments. You should barely see a trace of the top colour coming through. Rethread the machine top and bottom with 2 colours-set dial to no 4 and go from there.
