SOURCE: HDTV backlight turn off after 10-15 minutes, with some t-shooting

I have read everything I can find on the net about this problem for Polaroid TLX 04240b TVs (most, like mine, bought from Wal-Mart on Black Friday after Thanksgiving). I thought I was on a hot lead when I changed a 220uF 450v capacitor, but I still had the same problem. I saw a short post from somewhere else on this Fixya web site (sometimes I can find it again and sometimes I have trouble locating it) that said someone flipped a tiny switch on their circuit board and the problem was gone. I did the same thing and my set has been working fine. They had said their set was on for over 8 hours two days in a row when they posted. The other night my daughter left our set on over night for 20 hours and the picture still was working great. If you look through the top of the set when the picture is on you can see some white light at several locations, when the screen goes blank the white lights go out and a red LED light can be seen. If you take off the plastic cover on the back (3 screws) and then take off the metal cover (3 screws) this red LED light is on the upper circuit board in the lower left corner. Just a little to the right of the LED light is a small switch block that has 4 tiny white switches. I turned my set off and took the bottom switch (#4 and had the letters BURN by it) to the right "ON" position, turned the set back on and, so far so good. PLEASE NOTE!!! I know almost nothing about how transistor circuits work. I have no idea what the switches do or what long term effect this might have on the set. The set was only good as a paper weight before so even if this only fixes the set for a short time it was at least worth a try for me. Does anyone know what those switches are supposed to be for????

SOURCE: I have a Marantz SR5004 AV Surround Receiver.

Hello First off i would determine if the same thing happens when the cable box is connected directly to the TV with the hdmi cable.

If the picture goes out get a new box from your cable company.

If it works fine then its time to call Marantz

My Denon avr 4310 does a similar thing and after a lot of research it seems that the problem is with how digital signals are sent through the HDMI cable and how the control board of your receiver processes those signals.

Here what I mean

HDMI is meant to simplify connections by transmitting video, audio and CONTROL signals through 1 cable.

The problem becomes when you introduce a "middleman" in this case your receiver the control signal doesn't always get interpreted correctly.

My TV has the capability to "turn off" the "control" signal coming through the cable if yours does try that first (i have a sharp 52" led) this solved some of the issues.

My receiver has the capability to accept different inputs and merge them so here is how I get around the problem.

1. I use HDMI for video signal but also use the optical for audio this allows me to send the "complete" hdmi signal through the receiver and to the TV this complicates things but also allows you to get audio through your tv speakers so if you want to watch something late at night you aren't waking people up when the receiver gets loud. This stopped things like the video flickering or turning off.

You will have to play with your menu's to see if you can do this on your unit.

How to fix this easily? Dump HDMI and use component (red, blue green RCA's) for video yes its still HD and yes you will have to run audio separately. but it eliminates all the digital processing issues that receiver manufacturers haven't worked out.

I was pretty upset when I spent $1500 for my Denon receiver and Denon then told me that HDMI doesn't always make anything better.

Hope that helps

Tv has sound but no picture

I had similar problem with my Polaroid 42 inch. The screen would be fine for 10 minutes or so then go black. I found a work around that solved my problem and maybe you can to. What I did was remove the back panel of the TV. Make sure it is unplugged first. You should be able to see the electical board. Somewhere on the board may be a switch that says "Burn" or something with "Burn" in it. I set the switch to the "Burn" setting and the TV has worked fine ever since. Good Luck.

My polaroid FLM-373B shows no standby and wont power on

if no stand by indicator the first indication is power supply board failure. now the first place to be check is the fuse if blown?. if yes, before you replaced with new one re check other component parts in the power supply board which the cause of blown. you need a digital or analog tester so you can perform the job. then making sure you have at least a basic knowledge in any electronic repair, for safety purposes. hope this can help good luck.

Have a 42in polaroid hdtv... half the screen is colored lines butb the other hjalf is fine with good sound & pic

Usually a board---different names for each brand: Sustain, Y, Z etc.

Some sets (sound like yours) use one to drive right side of picture and another for left side.

The only bad news is Polaroid parts may be difficult if not impossible to find.
