Sounds like the motor could be overheating. have you made sure all the filters are clean? There are usually plastic levers to remove them. If so, and it's been off for a few minutes, try again.
That's the problem with dyson. They work for the first few months then start to break down. Your switch might need replacing or your cord connection is lose and causing it to short out and turn off.
the automatic cut out switch on the motor needs replacing when the motor gets hot this switch comes in and stops the motor from overheating when the motor cools down the cleaner will work again and cut out again when the motor gets hot if it is not replaced it will eventually burn the motor out after the switch has been replaced both the filter and cyclone need to be cleaned on a regular basis or the same will happen again

Thermal cut out
Most Dyson vacuums have a built in safety system that stops the machine if it
begins to overheat. This usually happens because the filter needs washing or
your machine is blocked. If your machine turns off on its own, unplug it and
leave it for at least an hour to cool down. Remember to check the filter and
look for blockages before re-starting. Any non- domestic use may adversely affect the filter performance
such as vacuuming up plaster dust.
Sounds like your vacuum is overheating. Check the above.
Ok What is probably causing the problem is an internal error inside the vacuum. What I recomend you to do is take it back where you bought it and tell them what ever is wrong with it.

My Hoover S3639 on/off switch stopped working. I don't hear the 'click' any more. I removed the top of the vacuum but can't determine how to replace the switch.
