I have recently been given a Victa Catch and Release Lawnmower,but no manual. How much oil do I put in before commencing use. And How do I drain dirty oil?

Get a oil drain container,Walmart has them,remove oil dip stick,turn lawnmower on side with gas tank up and drain dip stick hole over container and let drain out,old type mowers had a drain plug at bottom,newer ones ,you do like this.Your owners manual will tell you how much and what kind or you can look it up on internet. to put in,if no owners manual,add until on full mark.You can get rid of oil for free at any auto part store,

pull the top cover from the engine and follow the small wire from the coil and see if the fire melted the wire coating and its grounding out the kill switch wire

It is not good for that motor--drain and clean and expect plug may get fouled---do it the sooner the better.

Check that the oil level is not too high, further than that do not do anything. As far as I can remember, Victas have a one year guarantee. Rather than try to repair it or look into it, call the dealer or take it back to him as you will invalidate your warranty if you do anything to the unit, and that is not worth it. Let the dealer worry about it.

There are two ways to drain the oil. One is to tilt the lawnmower and drain the oil from the oil fill which is really a pain in the ****. The other is easy; here is what you do. First, disconnect the spark plug to ensure the mower cannot start (I don't have to tell you what effect a turning mower blade can have on human digits), and raise the mower up; you can use an ATV jack or you can get someone to help you set it on saw horses or you can simply raise the front by pushing the handle to the ground. On the bottom of the deck you will see a drain plug, you can't miss it, it's a square fitting...you can use a socket extension and wrench to pull it...make sure you have a receptacle to catch the old oil before you remove that plug, you don't want oil all over your garage floor (ask me how I know that! lol). Once the oil is drained completely, meaning there is nothing but drops coming out, clean the drain plug and re-install it. Now you can lower you rmower and fill the crankcase with fresh oil!

According to the operators manual there is no sump plug, instead you "dump" the oil out using the oil fill.

Below is step by step instructions copied from the Operators manual:

Drain oil while the engine is warm being careful not to touch the hot engine nor drained oil

a) Place engine level
b) Clean around oil fill
c) Remove filler cap
d) Have a container ready to collect the oil
e) Tip the lawnmower on its left side so that the oil will drain from the oil fill
f) Place the lawnmower level and top up with new oil
g) Check the oil level on the dipstick
Oil should be at "MAX" mark
h) Close the filler cap and wipe off any spilled oil

NOTE: The oil capacity is about 0.6 liter

Obviously it has had oil or similar inside it at one time or another. Have you given it enough running time to burn all that out? How old is lawnmower & was any work done recently to it?
