finally found it - look inside the large opening where the entire tray part fits - all the way up front - just inside the opening, not in the back where the contacts fit, but way in front - there resides the white micro switch - loosen it up and voila! It works (after 4 hours of hunting, scraping, filing etc - it works like a charm - photo attached, I hope. Thank you RB5193!
Empty the tray. If it is empty make sure the tray is re-inserted properly with the side tabs not interfering with the tray's placement. If that doesn't work you may have a faulty sensor. Try unplugging the unit, cleaning the inside using a flashlight and gentle wipes of the surfaces and the flap area with a soft wet rag. Then re-start it and see if that clears the error. Jura offers maintenance for if I recall correctly, $250 with from time to time an upgrade offer call them to ask. Hope this helps.

If the machine says TRAY MISSING it's the contacts at the back so clean as other people have stated, you can also use a cardboard nail file to clean the contacts at the back if there really skanky!.
If the machine keeps saying EMPTY GROUNDS even though you have, pull out the tray, look just inside the aparture where the tray goes top right at the front there is a small slot where if you look closely you can see a small white micro switch. This will be probably gunged up with coffee and the switch will be stuck up, get a can of WD40 and squirt a small amount up into the switch then poke the switch with a small screwdriver up and down until it moves smoothly.
Then replace all the bits, sit down, look smug and have a coffee cos you've fixed it!! :0)
SOURCE: I have a Jura Capresso Impressa S9 and it keeps

SOURCE: Jura F9-inside part fell off while pulling the tray. Cannot fix.
Kris I have this same problem. Did you figure out how to replace the flap or did you have to take it in for repair.
Does anyone else know how to replace this plastic flap?
