There are a few thing you may want to look at. In your menu settings (the second little wrench icon) you will find the LCD on/off options: Shutter Btn, Shutter/Disp, and Remain on, select your desired setting (page 179 in the T3i manual) Check to see that the display is activated by the "DISP." button located just in front of the Mode Dial. For the display to remain on during shooting you must me in "live view" which is avctivated by the icon button located to the immediate right of the eye cup. Unless this "live View" option is selected the LCD will remain off to save power. Also, if the menu is not visible try activating the quick menu "Q" button located just below the apature "AV" button. The LCD should work in the play/review mode at all times, if that is not the case then maybe repairs are necessary.

SOURCE: Canon EOS 400D LCD screen problem

There is no live preview mode on this camera. I am not sure if that is what you are referring to, but you can only use LCD for review and menu, not as a viewfinder.

The new Rebel XSi is the only one in the rebel series with this new feature.

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: EOS Utility does not recoganize Canon Rebel Xti

I believe there are 2 modes of usb transfer that you can pick in the camera. They are set somewhere in the menu in the options. If you go through the menus thoroughly you'll find it. One option is for connecting the camera directly to a printer and the other is for computer transfer (there might also be an Auto setting but I don't remember for sure). Make sure that setting is set for computer transfer. If that doesn't fix your problem, re-install or update EOS Utility / ZoomBrowser.

SOURCE: Canon EOS Rebel problem

This is usually caused by a defective shutter release switch - it'll have to go into a repair shop - independent shops will charge about $110 USD - Canon charges about $180

SOURCE: Canon 450D, ERROR 99 only when flash pops up

Err 99 usually means your lens contacts are dirty either on the lens itself or on the camera.

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

Things to check first for a camera that won't turn on, or works intermittently are the battery contact points, ensuring that they're clean, and making good contact with the battery. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.

New Camera, no picture on screen

This is normal for this camera. Think about it. The CMOS chip can't see through the mirror. After the shot is taken the electronic shutter exposes the CMOS chip and makes an image just like exposing film on a film type camera. Once you get used to it you may like it better. In outdoor or bright light situations it's difficult to view the LCD screen to frame the shot anyway.
