Shutter don't stop halfway

Hello I bought my Canon EOS Rebel XS a month ago and since last week-end, I can't press the shutter button halfway. The camera takes a picture, no matter what pressure I apply to the shutter button. Can't focus and then move the frame of the camera, very frustrating! Thanks for your help

Yes, there is a small 2-stage micro switch that needs to be replaced. 1st stage is permanently pressed and not switching/returning back due to so many time it's been pressed.
It just time. Switch is right under top cover.

3) Canon had a run of bad motors for this model - if mirror does not go up, then it is the mirror motor. If mirror goes up, shutter will not fire, press release again then the mirror goes down, the shutter motor is bad (same model motor). If mirror goes up, shutter fires, both blades travel together/no exposure, probably the shutter is bad.

Try resetting the camera by removing the battery for 15mins. Replace the battery and setup the date and time.
This may fix your problem.

How do i turn my camera on or off. Canon EOS rebel X 35 mm
There is no on/off switch as such. Press the shutter button halfway to turn it on, and leave it alone and it will power off.

Rebel 2000 went retarded
I got a Rebel 2000 off ebay, and it had the same problem. The Shutter wouldn't open, it showed dead batteries, and the mirror hung until I pressed the shutter button or changed modes.
After a good deal of surfing, I found that the most likely reason was a sticky/oily shutter
(http://photonotes.org/articles/oily-shutter/).
Since I didn't have much $$$ invested in the camera, I tried cleaning the shutter curtain with Qtips and alcohol. After a little cleaning, the shutter started to move. After a lot of cleaning, the shutter moves freely. I ran a roll of film through it, and it seems to be working just fine now.
