SOURCE: 8.50 Torque Rating Dual Rotating Tine Tiller: left old gas in tank and need to clean and start...

First step remove old fuel
Should be a turn off valve on bottom of fuel tank. Then go to the Carburetor were the fuel line runs to. on bottom is the float bowel. Remove the bolt in center of this bowel. drain old fuel out. Then turn on your fuel with bowel off. flushing the line. If not fuel runs out. Lightly tap the float. If still no fuel. Turn off fuel. Remove the float under the float is the needle and seat. Remove the needle if did not fall out. Clean or replace the needle. Then replace float and bowel. Turn fuel on check for leaks. remove spark plug check for spark. Should have a nice bright blue spark when you crank it. If so put a little fuel in spark plug hole. Give a pull. Or if you want dip the plug just to the end of threads in fuel. Replace plug . Should start right up.

Look on top of the machine. If there is an oil fill then no you do not use mixed fuel if yes it needs engine oil,30 wt.If there is no engine oil fill then you use mixed oil and gas,at a 50:1 ratio.

2 year old gas in tank. tiller won't stay running

When you drained the gas from the gas tank did you also take the carb apart and clean it. There should be a bowl that the fuel line from the gas tank goes to. There is a float in that bowl that has to go up and down to regulate how much gas goes into the engine. You may have a build up of varnish from old gas on the piece that the float moves up and down. Also there should be an idle jet that you screw in and out to adjust the idle. That also could be junked up.

Tiller will not continue to run. It has good spark. It will start if primed through the carburator but once the prime burns off it dies.

If fuel sits in the gas tank 3 months, the fuel deteriorates and it gums up the filter in the tank. You need to put stabil in the tank. This has happened to me over and over. It is best to dump out the gasoline if you don't use the tiller within one month. Some people who use chain saws commercially dump all the gas out every day and start over the next day. The symptoms are the tiller won't run at high speed at first, then as it gums up more
it won't run even at low speed, then becomes hard to start.
The gum is hard to see. Pull out the gas line to get to the filter and change the filter. Filters are only 3 or 4 dollars at hardware stores.

Does this use mixed gasoline or regular gaso;ine

If your model does in fact have markings on it or in the manual indicating it is a 4-cycle tiller you need to put straight gas in the gas tank. It will also have an oil plug/dipstick on the motor that you have to check to make sure it is full of oil. The oil should be checked every time you fill the gas tank for the safety of your motor.

My 3 yr old put sand in my tiller's gas tank. Can it be fixed?

Hi Lisa,

Hopefully it wasn't running.

You need to:
  • drain the tank
  • remove the tank
  • rinse it out (with more gas), including the hoses until no more sand is evident
  • reassemble
Compressed air can be useful in dislodging any sand remaining in the tank.

Pouring the gas through a paint filter will trap the sand so the gas can be used.

Best regards

Mike

I have a Troy Bilt Tuffy Tiller H30-35387S Ser 91330. The only number I can find for the tiller is on the shaft housing between the tines and the wheels and it is X0010527. I need a manual or parts diagram...

You've got the right serial number - it appears you've got one of the older Tuffy's. I'd suggest keeping an eye on Ebay for the manual you're looking for. I find them out there with some regularity. You can't get them from a dealer anymore because this Tuffy was sold by Troy Bilt before they went bankrupt and MTD bought the assets.
