You have to be the computers administrator to change any values on any hard drive on your computer

click start control panel user accounts on the users tab click the name of the computer administrator you must have full control

click start click to open on my computer you should see your usb drive could be E: or something right click select properties there will be an array of options

select the sharing tab option then advanced sharing make sure you have a tick in the share this folder box

then click permissions make sure you have all 3 boxes ticked full control changes and read in windows 7

click start control panel user accounts click on the administrators account if you have made one or you will have to create one in windows XP

click start right click on my computer select open
Right click the icon of your usb drive (It should be E:/ or something)
Click Properties in the menu that comes up
Click the Sharing tab
Click permissions
And finally, click Allow next to Full Control.

I had the same problem. But as it turns out, my guess is that you possibly tried to copy a file bigger than 4g to a fat32 filesystem. It took me a couple of hours to figure out that I had to format it to NTFS. Hope this helps someone :-)

How can i unprotect my kingston data traveler 4gb usb flash drive? i cannot save data and when i reformat it it said it is in write protect.

if there is a switch on the side that changes colour from white to red that is the write protect, you may also have reached the capacity of writes to the card and this is also why it is saying write protected as it cant write to it anymore. These flash drives do have a high amount of writes for its life, but if you have been using it as a memory booster for vista or win 7 then those read and writes will soon mount up.

Kingston DataTraveler Card Reader Problem

I have one also here just like that always write protected, you know what is the problem of that is your card reader, its a USB connection input to your computer, all you have to do buy a new one Card Reader, I'm sure it will not work anymore unless you try to repair that Card Reader to a Technician. Always pop-up write protected but when I twist my USB Wire sometimes it work, sometimes not. Don't let plug it again because this time your USB connection in CPU will be damage. Supposed to be only Card Reader is the and maybe your USB Connections too will damage.
Hope this idea will help you.

Remove the write protection on 2GB USB Kingston Data Traveler 100

Found this on Kingston site, doesn't help much but may point you in the right direction.

Unfortunately this unit does not have any security or write protection feature. If you receive a write protection message with this drive, check for the following:
  1. Verify that you are allowed to write to removable storage devices. There may be a security setting in the OS that disables write access to removable storage devices.
  2. Make sure you have not enabled write protection on the drive by using a third party software.
  3. If none of the above apply, the drive may be defective.
