1. My thumb drive is 4GB "super talent", and I have used it for about 2years

2. Suddenly, it show up as "REMOVABLE" SKYMEDI USB DEVICE (!)

3. I tried "google" for answer... and did not get further

4. Finally, I righ click on "my computer" -> select "manage" the "computer management" MMC windows open

4.1 I tried the "Disk Management" and it still can not connect to it

4.2 I clicked on "Removable Storage" ... and then I "SKYMEDI..."

4.3. I righ click on the device and select "Task" -> "Free" (thinking ... what can be worst!)

4.4 ... sunddenly ... I see my drive back ... with everything on it....

I hope that this help (... I am guessing that the "removable storage" manager locked this device somehow)

Some pen drives have a small toggle switch with them which make the drive write protected try locating that switch. If there is no such switch then try formatting the drive preferably from safe mode. you can do this by following these steps:
1. Shutdown your computer or laptop
2. Insert USB Memory Stick into your laptop or Computer
3. Turn on laptop and then immediately start pressing (Fcool.png key then Advanced Boot Options screen will come up
4. Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt
5. After loading files if your USB Memory Stick drive letter is (G) for example then write as
6. C:\windows\system32>G: and press enter
7. G:\>format G: and press enter
8. If ask you (Y/N) then press (Y) and press enter
9. Now a full format will start which remove write protection from USB Memory Stick.

Dear,
There is a fact the problem may be due to that and it is - Capacity of pen drive . Most of the time pen drive of capacity 1, 2, 4 GB are supported by P-III, not 8 GB,please check it.
Do one thing check it on another PC. if the result is same then you should visit your nearest service station.

Thanks and regards,
Raksh Kumar

Dear Chandu!
Try formating in safe mode, as well as make sure that all the programs and utilities are stopped before formating it( you Can use Task Manager for that) ,Use an updated anti virus program for scanning it from viruses.

If the drive fails to format, you can try it in other USB ports or a different computer. But if it continues to fail format then it is bad and needs to be replaced.

click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems for a computer and its parts

Up to you,, if you put a flash drive into your USB port, and windows see's the drive, because its listed under my computer, but when you go to open the drive it says, please insert disk

This is telling you the flash drive has failed.

The only good thing is, if you have anything on the drive, there are programs that will extract the data from the drive so you don't lose it.

You have three options,

Extract the data that is on the drive.

Try a repair program, which can erase the drive when it tries ti repair it.

Send the flash drive to the company for repair.
