My Kenmore upright, 10 years old, had a cooling problem. Called a tech and the freon was low but not empty. He serviced it to 5 psi and it cooled right down in 4 hours to -10. I keep it on a hot glassed in florida room. It is coolling ok but ice is forming on the copper pipe routing to/ from the compressor. At night when the temp and humidity goes down, mthe ice melts and ops is normal. Do I have a problem or is that normal for the hot and humid location? Thanks, Phil

SOURCE: 13 months old Kenmore compressor very hot.

lacdoi,
huuum At your service!

You said,
The warranty just ran out, Sears came out told me needs a control board ($210 for just labor to replace) not sure about part price. I though a new freezer is about twice his labor and parts, so I sent him away minus $65.
I did some troubleshooting today, pull the plug for 2 days. Plug it in, temp alarm goes on all the time. Turn alarm off, left the freezer running for 4hrs.
Not cold at all, some cool air. Fan is on, compressor is on (can hear humming noise and is vibrating). Compressor is very hot to the touch, could burn finger.
Should I call Sears again, wonder how much to fix all the problem? Or just give up, look for another brand new one (not Kenmore).

MY ADVICE:
Sounds like a big repair bill and multiple problems

How old is the appliance?

If the appliance is 10 years old or more you may not be advisable to put good money into bad!
New appliance are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!!!!
Replace it.

You will be fine

Bless You huuum

Please give me the best rating for my fine advice before you sign off.
Thank you

SOURCE: Kenmore Upright Freezer compressor running 6 seconds every minute

Usually the compressor runs pretty warm anyway. However if you think it's too hot I would start with the condenser coils located either under the unit or on occasion they are located on the back. The air flow across these coils as well as the airflow around the compressor must be maintained. I forgot to ask if the condenser fan is running. Check and make sure that the Fan is running and the air flow is good. Also, When you transported the unit did you move it standing vertically like it normally stands or did you lay it on its side. If you transported the unit on its side you must wait a minimum of 24 to 48 hours prior to start up or the unit could be ruined permanently. The refrigerant has to be utilized through the compressor as a gas. If the unit is on its side liquid refrigerant could be introduced into the compressor and can cause permanent damage. If this is the case I recommend that you turn the unit off at once and wait the 36 hours for the Refrigerant to settle then try it again. This transportation rule applies for any appliance That uses refrigerant, Air Conditioners etc. These units are not that hard to diagnose. The only other item that is usually a problem is the defrost timer. It is not very expensive and can also cause some of the same symptoms that you are eluding to. The defrost timer allows the freezer to periodically shut down to prevent the buildup of frost or ice on he evaporator coils and on the inside the unit. If it is defective, then the unit will either run all the time and cause the evaporator coils to freeze up or will not allow the compressor to switch on and it will not freeze like it should.

SOURCE: Upright freezer door inside developing ice

The door seal is at fault. Regardless of the small tear it is not sealing well.
Take a dollar bill and close it in the door. Then pull on the bill to feel resistance.
You will find it pulls easily in some place. That is where your air leak is that is causing the condensation.
Do this about every 6 inches all the way around the seal.

Whirlpool freezer cool air but not freezing?

Check the seal first. Then check the freon. If it's R-12, you can go to the auto parts house. They have a bottle with a hose to add freon. You put it in on the "suction" low side with the unit running. you can tell when it has enough by feeling the low line be cold and teh high pressure line is warm to hot

For the second time in the 4 or 5 years that I have owned my Kenmore 16.7 upright it quit cooling altogether again -- the first time I cooled the compressor with a damp (to wet) towel and a fan, being...

If the compressor is overheating I would check the condensor fan and make sure it's turning. Sounds like you wouldn't have noticed this already though. Also, if the compressor is turning on for 5 or 10 seconds and then clicking off then your start relay is probably bad. Pull the relay off the compressor and shake it. If something is loose inside then it's bad. That is, if it's a whirlpool made kenmore. Kenmore doesn't make appliances they only brand them. The refrigerator could have been made by Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, LG, Maytag, Amana, or other. So, it's depenant on who made it.

12 year old freezer won't get above +20. Could it be the temp control dial?

I think you meen below 20 . Its mostlikely low on freon. if only half or less of the evap coil has frost , you low on freon. Then you have a leak in the system.

Freezer not freezing

Is it running? You might need to put your ear up to machine, to hear it, They run very quitely.
If not running, could be a bad cold control (thermostat), or defective relay and overload mounted on the compressor body.
If the compressor is running but no cooling, then you're in serious trouble unless,
The unit is 5 years old or newer. In that case you have factory warranty on what is called the sealed system. Contact the dealer in that case for service. Service should be free.

Does not seem to be cold enough ten yrs old

Hi, first check your coils on the back and make sure they are clean, then check the cover on the front bottom and make sure it is clean. If it is all clean and still running warm then it may need to be recharged with freon. At that point you should contact a heating/cooling technician to come out and recharge your system. They are the only ones licenced to handle the freon to recharge your cooling system on the fridge.

My GE upright freezer does not get cold.

Sounds like the system is low on freon. The other common problem is a dirty condenser. Insure the condenser is clean, if it is. You will need to charge the system with freon. Which only a qualified refrigeration tech should do.
